Scene

A beautiful building with outdated interiors

The stately, classic Melia Granada is a six-floor building with arches, flags, and potted trees marking its entrance. Inside, light from large rectangular lamps floods the tiled lobby. The uninspired furniture and busy motif carpets we saw in the sitting area have since been replaced with neutral carpeting and furniture for a much more modern look. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed -- this is a popular spot for both tourists and business travelers. The lobby bar feels more upscale than the rest of the lobby, with ceilings are paneled in dark, handsome wood.

Location

Conveniently located in the center of Granada

Halfway between the Autovia (A44) and the Alhambra, in the center of town, this is an excellent base for tourists wanting to get around the city on foot. The neighborhood is bustling with shops, restaurants, bakeries, and tapas places, and there’s a bus stop down the street. The Melia Granada is a one-minute walk from the Calle Navas tapas bar and it’s not much father to get to the Alcaiceria, Puerta Real, Calle Elvira, Plaza Nueva, and the Science Park. The Congress Center is a five-minute stroll from the hotel.

Rooms

All rooms have minibars and free Wi-Fi; some have great views.

Some of the Melia Granada Hotel's 232 rooms and suites have picturesque views of the Alhambra, the Albayzin, and the Sierra Nevada mountains. Rooms have minibars, free Wi-Fi, and 37-inch LCD TVs, and the bathrooms have tubs and are stocked with a sweet-smelling selection of toiletries. Rooms facing the street can get noisy, as Granada is boisterous until the wee hours. Modern furniture feels pleasant enough but is uninspired. Some rooms are carpeted in a sad, faded red, while others have shiny wood floors.

Features

Event space, lobby bar, restaurant, and fitness center

A conference center with four large event rooms is available for parties and meetings of up to 220 people. There’s an abundant breakfast buffet (not included in room rates) and a restaurant serving lunch only, and the lobby's Bar Albaicín serves cocktails and coffee until late. All three spaces were refurbished after our visit, with Garbo by Meliá looking the most contemporary, thanks to wooden flooring, chic hanging lamps, and modern furniture. The small fitness center is equipped with a few exercise machines.
