The 185-room Hotel Macia Real de la Alhambra combines aspects of modern and ancient Andalusia, with chic, contemporary decor in public spaces, and a traditional hammam at the luxe on-site spa. The location is significantly removed from the city center, but public transportation stops right by the hotel, and the hotel's restaurant and facilities -- including a rooftop pool -- are nice enough that most find a stay at this hotel worth the trade-off.

Scene

Chic, modern hotel largely attracts couples

Hotel Macia Real de la Alhambra feels modern both inside and out. The common areas are spacious and chic, while a large photograph of Alhambra castle in the lobby adds a touch of old-world Spain to the otherwise cool, contemporary vibe. The hotel has a large conference facility, but it nonetheless mostly attracts couples -- perhaps because its location outside of the city center is remote, and thus can feel romantic to those traveling as a duo, and inconvenient for those on business. Macia Real has a nice on-site restaurant, so foodies will not have to leave the premises to find a gourmet meal, and many guests appreciate the spa, which includes traditional Arabic baths. Outdoor hallways and floor-to-ceiling windows add to the romantic, authentic Andalusian feel.

Location

In a Granada suburb, meaning a trek to the Alhambra and city center

Macia Real is located in a residential suburb of Granada, and the famed Alhambra is a thirty-minute walk uphill. A car or bus ride is necessary to visit the city center and its historic sights, but public transportation stops right by the hotel and runs frequently. There are several shops and bars within walking distance, and the airport is about 20 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Stylish and sophisticated with large windows and terraces, though some guests report issues with TV reception

Room decor at the Macia Real is stylish and chic, with a sophisticated color palette of gray, purple, and beige, accented by warm wooden details. Bathrooms feel luxurious, with up-to-date showers and tubs, modern sinks, and lots of marble. All rooms feature safes, free Wi-Fi, and small flat-screen TVs, though there have been complaints of unreliable TV reception. Some rooms have terraces with lounge chairs. Those facing the main street can get a bit noisy.

Features

The rooftop pool and on-site spa are highlights

The coolest thing about Macia Real? Many would argue that it is the Arabic baths, or hammam, located in the hotel's Moorish-themed luxury spa, which also includes several water features and a variety of massage offerings. Others, however, may say it's the small rooftop pool, complete with a deck that offers both sunny and shady spots. The rooftop is also home to the fitness center, but with just three cardio machines, it's a bit of a disappointment.Daraxa, the elegant hotel restaurant, serves excellent Andalusian and international cuisine, and the breakfast buffet is extensive. Macia Real also boasts some meeting spaces, but most visitors are leisure travelers.
