Bottom Line

The 422-room Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Gran Canaria, Mogan is a large, upscale resort catering to families and couples seeking a fun, bustling vacation. Its entertainment program, big pools, and kids’ club keep guests of all ages busy during the day and into the night, but there are also quieter areas for travelers in need of some relaxation, including a large pool with a whirlpool and lounge. The main buffet offers a varied spread that gets mixed reviews, and there's also a reasonably priced Italian eatery. A pleasant spa has indoor and outdoor areas, as well as several treatments rooms, a sauna, and steam room. Use of the hydrotherapy area, though, is an extra cost. Rooms are large and light, and come with great amenities such as free Wi-Fi, minibars, coffeemakers (Nespresso machines in suites), and balconies with loungers. For something cheaper and closer to the beach, consider the Paradise Valle Taurito.

Scene

Busy resort with tons for families and quieter adults-only areas

Set against the dry mountains of southwestern Gran Canaria, the Radisson Blu is one of the nicest resorts in the area. The property has a somewhat futuristic feel from the outside. The lobby is housed in a series of ochre-colored cubes with black-stone accents that stand out against the craggy mountain landscape and long white buildings housing the rooms and suites. Decor-wise, the hotel is modern yet subdued, with a soft palette that combines pastel hues with natural woods and clean lines, creating appealing spaces full of light. The focus, however, is on the outdoors. A series of elevated paths shaded by beehive-shaped structures run above tropical grounds full of colorful flowers and palm trees. Manicured lawns dotted with shrubs and trees feel inviting and relaxing, while large decks with lots of seating and sail shades offer plenty of space to unwind. The crowd here is mostly families with young children, and the vibe is bustling even in the off-peak season. The main saltwater pool is where the action takes place during the day, complete with music, activities, a kiddy section, and a kids’ club. Those traveling without children may find it too loud and overrun with young guests, but the property has a smart layout that includes quieter adults-only areas separated from the more family-friendly features by the lobby and spacious gardens.

Location

Serene location a 15-minute walk from Puerto Mogan and the beach

The hotel is located on a pleasant avenue just north of Puerto Mogan, a former fishing village known for its sandy beach and bar-filled marina. There isn’t much in the immediate vicinity of the resort but other hotels and private residences, but the city center and its many restaurants, bars, and shops can be found just a 10- to 15-minute walk away. The beach is also just about 15 minutes away on foot. There aren’t many cultural attractions in town, but both Canada de los Gatos pre-Hispanic archaeological site and the Mogan Viewpoint can be reached on foot in less than 20 minutes. The capital city of the island, Las Palmas, is just over an hour away by car, while the Gran Canaria Airport is around a 45-minute drive away.

Rooms

Spacious, contemporary rooms with solid amenities, balconies, and free Wi-Fi

The Radisson Blu’s 422 rooms are spread over several contiguous four-story buildings set between the mountains and the pools. Decor is contemporary, with a warm palette that combines soft grays and browns with bright pops of Prussian blue and anthracite accents. Brushed-metal touches tie in well with the soft wood furniture, while velvet sofa beds add texture. The hotel offers several room types, ranging from 35-square-meter (377-square-foot) Standard units to 130-square-meter (1,400-square-foot) three-bedroom suites. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors slide open to big balconies with loungers and either mountain or pool views, and all rooms have sofa beds for at least one additional guest. Rooms are equipped with a good array of up-to-date amenities, including LCD TVs with international and child-friendly channels, free Wi-Fi, safes, minibars, and coffeemakers. Suites have Nespresso machines. Adjoining rooms are available for families and groups, and Family units come with perks for children, including welcome gifts and cribs (on request). Bathrooms are spacious and modern, and most have separate showers and tubs. Walls, however, are made of frosted glass in most, which can be lacking in privacy for some guests.

Features

Tons for families plus an adults-only pool, spa, sports facilities, and three restaurants

The hotel caters mostly to families traveling with young kids. The main pool area is always bustling and features a separate section for kids with brightly painted water features. There is music around the pool during the day, and the entertainment team keeps things lively with aqua gym classes, games, and contests. The kids’ club is also right next to the main pool. Although most guests here come with kids in tow, adults seeking some peace and quiet can relax on the separate adults-only deck, complete with a huge pool, a large whirlpool, and a lounge serving small bites and drinks. The spa offers a big hydrotherapy area that guests can use for a fee, plus several treatment rooms, a sauna, steam room, and an area where kids can get pampered. The 24-hour gym is bright and has enough cardio and strength-training machines for a full workout, and there are outdoor sports facilities that include a rock-climbing wall and a multi-sports court. Tennis and paddle courts are also available, but they cost extra. Food at the Radisson Blu gets mixed reviews. The Larder is the main restaurant here, offering a vast breakfast buffet plus themed buffet dinners. While some find it varied and tasty, others find it underwhelming for an upscale hotel. Filini is the hotel’s only a la carte, serving up decent Italian cuisine at reasonable prices. Snacks and light meals are available at both the main pool bar, Il Taglio, and the lounge by the adults-only pool. Room service is offered 24/7. The hotel also features two meeting rooms with audiovisual equipment and catering services plus a business center with printing services. Indoor and outdoor parking are available free of charge.
