Bottom Line

The 56-room Hotel Puerto de Mogan is a mid-range property housed in a traditional, whitewashed building typical of the resort's picturesque harbor surrounds. Its location is outstanding, set on the quayside overlooking the sea and just steps from rows of charming houses and cafes. Accommodation is a mix of guest rooms and apartments scattered around the village, some of which are far enough to be bothersome. Colorful cutouts of underwater scenes give the spaces personality. An outdoor pool provides lovely sea views, as does the restaurant and most of the rooms. Travelers might enjoy the more contemporary lodgings at the nearby Portonovo Apartments.

Scene

Mid-range hotel in a charming whitewashed building along the water

Thanks to its crisp whitewashed facade featuring a canary-yellow frame and intricate wrought-iron balconies, the Hotel Puerto de Mogan fits perfectly amongst the surrounding (and similarly picturesque) old fisherman's dwellings. A sun-bleached awning and promotional materials at the entrance, however, detract a little from its initial charm. Stepping inside, the colorful lobby has fishing-themed paraphernalia and decor, while further into the building is a bright and airy lounge with comfortable furnishings and books for borrow under a circular glass ceiling. To the rear is a lovely pool terrace skirted with palm trees and giant cacti, plus superb views over the sea and valley. The property offers rooms in the main building, as well as various apartments scattered nearby. Clientele is mostly Spanish, German, and British couples (largely through major tour operators), as well as a few families with kids.

Location

Prime location in pretty Puerto de Mogan overlooking the marina

The hotel has an enviable position set on the quayside in the scenic Puerto de Mogan -- both a resort town and quiet fishing village on the southwest coast of Gran Canaria. Just outside the property is the marina and picturesque paths lined with charming traditional houses and quaint cafes, as well as a couple of tacky souvenir shops. One side of the hotel overlooks a lovely sandy cove and local beach, while the other faces the marina. Just a few minutes' walk away are a handful of eateries and retail outlets. There's very little in the way of bars or nightlife, and most places are closed well before midnight. One of the more remote spots on the island, the hotel is around a 45-minute drive from Gran Canaria Airport, so cab fares can be pricey.

Rooms

Most rooms and apartments have balconies or terraces with sea views

The hotel has 56 rooms, all of which are decorated with colorful, sea-themed artwork. Rooms extend to small balconies with port or sea views, while most apartments have a spacious sun terrace -- many with sea views. Apartments also include separate lounges and small kitchens with dining areas. Standard room amenities include mini-fridges, decent free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and basic toiletries. Additionally, complaints have been made about some apartments being away from the hotel and its facilities, and some being close to a noisy road.

Features

Outdoor pool with panoramic sea views and poolside bar

An extensive buffet breakfast of hot and cold items (not included in standard room rates) is served in the hotel's bright restaurant, a whole side of which provides lovely views over the sea. The restaurant is also open for dinner and extends to a small poolside bar -- the quality of the food is reportedly very good. A highlight of the hotel is the outdoor pool with a shallow area and hot tub; it's surrounded by plenty of loungers and has panoramic sea views. Guests can also book beach loungers and umbrellas at reception for a fee. There's also a spa with an indoor pool, whirlpool tub, and massage treatments. Wi-Fi is available for free throughout the property.
