Bottom Line

This upscale 392-room holiday complex makes an immediate memorable impression, with its wave-like architecture and colorful, quirky decor and murals. Sitting atop a terraced cliff and offering sweeping views, the Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel has two infinity pools and a 20,00 square-foot spa with a range of hydrotherapy treatments, and a fitness center. Rooms are spacious, and all but a few have views of the sea. The all-inclusive option, which some guests say is impractical and confusing, is not mandatory, and the town of Puerto Rico, which offers many other eating choices, is less than a five-minute drive away. Or, guests can take the glass lift down the cliff to the promenade -- though this isn't an option at night.

Scene

A relaxing atmosphere amid playful, Gaudi-esque architecture

From the big colorful entrance with its bold marine-themed mosaics and sculptures to the airy lobby atrium with its sweeping arches, the Gloria Palace Amadores Thalasso & Hotel is truly one-of-a-kind. Although some find the layout confusing, the undulating, Gaudi-esque natural stone architecture is a refreshing change from the homogeneity of many of the surrounding hotels. The terraced grounds are accented with palm trees and linked by wooden pathways, while elevators and a spectacular central spiral staircase connects the floors. The hotel attracts a mixture of families and couples, and even when full, the ambiance is usually restful and relaxing.

Location

Imbedded in hillside overlooking the Atlantic with easy access to beach and town center

Gloria Palace Amadores is set into a hillside overlooking the water. Amadores Beach and the town of Puerto Rico are within walking distance along the main coastal road -- it takes about 15 minutes to reach the town on foot. Located on the southeast Mogán coast of Gran Canaria, the island's airport is about 30 miles away. Parking at the hotel is free.

Rooms

Almost all rooms open to balconies with beautiful sea views

The hotel's 392 rooms and suites are clean and spacious with colorful decor and modern furnishings. Lounge areas include a silver sofa bed and matching armchair. Abstract seashell art hangs on the walls. Sliding doors open onto sparsely furnished balconies, with most offering sea views. All rooms have air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels -- along with electric kettles. Large bathrooms include deep shower/tub combos, a private water closet, and double sinks. A hairdryer and a makeup mirror are mounted to the wall and packets of toiletries are presented on the vanity. Double rooms have twin beds pushed together to make one large bed. Some rooms on lower floors don't have sea views, and past guests have complained about lack of privacy and noise from rooms near the pools.

Features

Two infinity pools, a huge spa with multiple hydrotherapy massage stations, and a fitness center

The hotel's two large infinity pools are surrounded by spacious sun terraces and look out over the ocean -- though guests need to rise early to secure sun loungers. The thalasso spa offers a long list of treatments, and its facilities include a heated indoor seawater pool, and a variety of hydrotherapy stations. There's a fitness center with plenty of aerobic and weight machines, and an outdoor game area with a pool table and ping-pong table. Two restaurants are on-site, one is a buffet and the other does a la carte -- along with several bars. All-inclusive packages are available for meals and drinks, but what's included and when can be a real puzzle. Kids have a playground and their own game rooms, and there's a multi-function sports court on the hotel grounds. Evening entertainment is available, although it may not appeal to everyone. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
