Bottom Line

ClubHotel Riu Papayas is a pleasantly modern, 468-room all-inclusive located on the outskirts of Playa del Ingles, but still only a 10-minute walk to the beach. This four-pearl property is meticulously clean and well-maintained, drawing a mix of families and couples. There are a good variety of facilities, including two pools, three restaurants, two bars, free gym access, and a rooftop sun deck. Its great-value all-inclusive plan provides drinks and snacks 24 hours a day, and there’s free Wi-Fi throughout. Rooms are contemporary, with air-conditioning, balconies, and comfortable beds, but there are no sea views or minibars. Daily entertainment and activities include kid-friendly options. Free private parking is available, along with free shuttles to the beach. For an adult-only all-inclusive that's closer to the beach, try Labranda Marieta instead.

Scene

Upscale all-inclusive with well-maintained facilities attracting a number of families with kids

At 468 rooms, ClubHotel Riu Papayas is one of the larger resorts in Playa del Ingles. The area, which often feels a bit rundown, is a sharp contrast to the hotel, which is immaculately maintained and has a truly upscale atmosphere. The reception area consists of a soothing palette of neutral grays and whites, with blue and lavender accents. Everything from the gray, stone floor to the minimalist geometric sofas were in clean, pristine condition during our 2017 visit. Rooms echo a similar vibe: they’re impeccably maintained, and have a lighthearted seaside feel. Even the restaurants, although themed after different cuisines, all have chic and modern decor. Riu Hotels and Resorts is a global group, with eight hotels on Gran Canaria -- seven of which are located in Playa del Ingles. Although a few of them are adult-only, this particular hotel is family-friendly and sees a good number of kids. It accommodates plenty of couples as well, and a variety of nationalities and age groups.

Location

On a local road outside of central Playa del Ingles, a 10-minute walk to the beach

ClubHotel Riu Papayas is located on the outskirts of Playa del Ingles, on a local road surrounded by other hotels and bungalows. The closest attraction is the CC Kasbah Shopping Center, which is a bit rundown, but has a selection of bars and nightlife. It's a five-minute walk away. The beach is within a 10-minute walk, but the hotel also provides free bus transfers for those not in the mood to walk. Yumbo Shopping Center, with its gay-friendly bars and clubs, is 15 minutes away on foot. The sand dunes of neighboring Maspalomas are a protected nature reserve and can be accessed via the public promenade running through sister hotel Riu Palace, which is a five-minute drive away. Gran Canaria has just one airport, which is around 20 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Pleasant, modern, and clean, with lighthearted decor plus AC, free Wi-Fi, balcony or terrace - most with sofas

All 468 rooms are pleasant and clean, with a lighthearted seaside feel that comes from neutral gray color schemes and cheery turquoise accents. They feature large flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, ceiling fans, and balconies or terraces. While mini-fridges are included, there are no minibars for unlimited in-room drinking (free bottled water is available from one of the resort's bars). Double Rooms also have a small seating area and sofa, while Family Rooms feature an extra bedroom with a queen-size bed, but no seating area. Bathrooms are a treat, with a sleek, modern look, navy blue and white tiling, and large walk-in showers. Balconies are furnished with two chairs and a small side table, and get varying amounts of sunlight depending on their orientation. Some rooms have a view over the central garden area and are available at a higher rate, while others overlook neighboring hotels. Unfortunately, none have sea views. The hotel’s Wi-Fi speeds are generally good according to guests, and it’s free for two devices at a time. The AC works well, and guests also get free access to safes.

Features

Two pools, 24-hour drinks and snacks, buffet and themed dining, gym, and kid-friendly facilities

This hotel has a fairly good range of facilities, and although the main freeform pool may feel slightly small for the size of the hotel, recent guests never had an issue with overcrowding. Sun beds, on the other hand, are packed in quite tightly, and many of them are housed under permanent shade, putting the sunny ones in high demand. The heated kids’ pool, although a bit small in size, has a water slide and play fountains to keep children entertained. There’s also a poolside bar with a large terrace and plenty of seating for poolside drinks and lounging. This is where the daily evening entertainment takes place, which includes live music and special performances. Daily hosted recreation and games are also available at the pool, and use of all sun beds, umbrellas, and pool towels is free. The hotel offers a great all-inclusive plan that includes free snacks, cocktails, and beverages 24 hours a day. The main buffet restaurant has plenty of variety including at breakfast, serves themed buffets twice a week, and offers live show cooking. The hotel also has two themed restaurants -- Spanish and Asian cuisine -- which are part of the all-inclusive plan. However, advanced reservations are required. This Riu is big on kid-friendly facilities, and has a kids’ club with special activities, an art club for making arts and crafts, and a small outdoor playground. There’s also free access to the gym, which is small, but contains modern equipment. The rooftop sunbathing terrace has both shaded and unshaded sun beds, and is a great spot for peace and quiet. The hotel has a great Wi-Fi connection which is free throughout, as well as free private parking, and free shuttles to the beach.
