Bottom Line

The Ballachulish
Hotel is a mid-range property housed in an imposing Scots Baronial
building overlooking the stunning Loch Linnhe in the Glencoe Highlands. Some of the simply furnished rooms have views of the loch and/or jetted tubs. While the interiors feel dated and in need of a refresh, creaky stairs and cracking log fires
create plenty of homey ambience. A bar-bistro provides a hearty breakfast and
good range of whiskies accompanied by loch views. The nearby Isles of Glencoe provides more
modern lodging at comparable rates.

Scene

Fine Scots Baronial-style architecture with dated yet homey ambience

Drawing on Medieval and Renaissance influences, the Ballachulish Hotel is housed in a
handsome piece of Scots Baronial-style architecture characterized by spired
turrets and stone arches. While some efforts have been
made to continue the old-world tone in the interiors, with gilt-framed portraits and a few antique
pieces, a combination of mismatched furnishings and dated decor tends to break
the spell. Modern-looking paneling jars with traditional drapery, while a
scattering of random vintage objects adds to the confusing melange of styles. Crackling
log fires and creaky staircases, however, add a unpolished, homey feel and lend the place some quirky, old-school charm. It's also easy to overlook its
aesthetic shortcomings for the breathtaking views the hotel commands across the lochs.

Location

Stunning setting overlooking two lochs in the Glencoe Highlands

The hotel is nestled among the mountainous Highlands of Glencoe and
overlooking Loch Linnhe and Loch Leven. While the rugged and scenic
surroundings makes it popular with hikers and ramblers, being set just off the
main A828 road also means easy access by car (though there's little in the way of local public transportation). The hotel is also just over an hour's drive from the legendary Loch Ness and a couple minutes from the Dragon's Tooth Golf Course.

Rooms

Simple, traditionally furnished rooms, some with jetted tubs and loch views

The hotel's simple,
traditionally styled rooms come with kettles and
TVs, though some of the decor is dated and showing signs of wear.
Upgraded Feature Rooms are larger and provide views overlooking the loch; some
are decorated in brighter and fresher styling, while others have sleigh beds. Bathrooms are generally clean and well-maintained, and some feature
jetted tubs. Note that due to the presence of peat in the area, the water can appear to
have a slight yellow tinge, but it's perfectly safe.

Features

Full Scottish breakfast, a fine whisky selection, and crackling log fires

A full Scottish breakfast
is included in room rates and served daily in the hotel's loch-side bar. The eatery also serves lunch and dinner, with a strong emphasis on traditional
Scottish fare. A good choice of whiskies can be sipped in front of open fires
in the library and lounge, though with no local competition prices can be
steep. While there are no spa or health facilities on-site, guests receive a
free pass to use the pool and sauna at the Isles of Glencoe Hotel, a
five-minute drive away.
