Bottom Line

The Sherbrooke Castle Hotel, is not -- as the name suggests -- a true castle, but it looks an awful lot like one, with a grand red sandstone facade complete with turrets and towers. The upper-middle-range hotel has 18 rooms with varying styles that include quality wooden furniture and spacious well-lit bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, though breakfast is not included. There are multiple function venues throughout, though the hotel is well outside the city's tourist areas, and guests looking to be closer to the action should consider ABode Glasgow, a sharp boutique hotel in the center of town.

Scene

Castle-style hotel with private landscaped gardens

The historic hotel -- which was built in 1896 to resemble a Scottish castle -- attracts a mixture of couples and families, as well as wedding parties and a few business guests. Everything about the hotel screams "Scotland" immediately upon entering. There are tartan plaid carpets, suits of armor, weathered wood-paneled walls, period oil paintings, and ornate wallpaper throughout the lobby. Common areas include a grand ballroom with chandeliers for wedding functions and corporate events, landscaped private gardens, and a huge sun room with a large wooden bar area. The on-site Sherbrooke Castle Hotel Restaurant features an open fireplace, light-filled stained glass windows, decorative ceiling cornices, and Georgian-style wood-paneled walls, with an adjoining neutral-toned dining, lounge, and bar area.

Location

Residential area outside of Glasgow city center

The Sherbrooke Castle Hotel is located in a residential area on the outskirts of Glasgow city, a 12-minute drive from Glasgow Airport and a 13-minute drive from Glasgow Central Station, The Scottish Exhibition & Conference Center, and The SSE Hydro concert and sports venue. Of course, this all depends on traffic. The Burrell Collection -- with more than 8000 artistic pieces on display -- is based in Pollok Country Park, a seven-minute drive from the hotel. The House for an Art Lover is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. It's an 11-minute drive from Hampden Park -- Scotland's national stadium --  and a 20-minute drive from the Emirates Arena, which has an on-site basketball court and gym facilities.

Rooms

A mixture of traditional and contemporary rooms

Guest rooms at the Sherbrooke Castle Hotel are spread across multiple buildings, with traditional and somewhat dated rooms based in the old "castle," and more contemporary Garden Rooms across the hotel drive from the main building. Newer rooms have fresh design schemes and brighter colors, plus attractive neutral carpets and simple, but elegant, mid-tone furniture. Junior Suites have separate lounge areas, while high-end Bridal Suites have views of the hotel grounds and handsome classical decor including solid wood four-poster beds, damask drapes, and ornate wooden furniture. We did notice a bit of wear and tear on some guest room furnishings, particularly in older rooms like the Bridal Suite. Accessible rooms are available on request. All rooms feature free newspapers on request, flat-screen TVs, hairdryers, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. Bathrooms are pristine and vary in size and decor, with some featuring separate bath tubs and walk-in showers.

Breakfasts are not included in room rates, and room service is also available. Free on-site parking is available and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
