This Radisson Blu
is a high-end, 250-room hotel occupying an eye-catching building in the
center of Glasgow. The location means most of the city is within easy walking distance while also
providing easy access by car and train. Rooms have designer interiors and
impressive floor-to-ceiling windows, though some beds have been reported as
being too hard. Access to the health club with a pool is a big bonus, while restaurant and
bars are nicely styled -- albeit rather expensive. It is certainly one of the
priciest options in town, but this is luxury 21st-century style.
Scene
Modern hotel with eye-catching architecture and sleek 21st-century styling
The first thing
you can't help but notice at this Radisson Blu Hotel is its striking, modern facade
-- it is eye-catching and angular, even avant-garde; the design has won more than a few
architectural awards. Inside is no less impressive, with its bright, lofty atrium
comprising towering sheets of glass, warm wood flooring, and sleek
21st-century furnishings. The overall effect is cool and
contemporary, while hallway murals pay homage to Glasgow's landmarks through
playful illustrations and splashes of colorful modern art (these touches help avoid the hotel all
feeling a little too corporate). Check-in is at one of three discreet,
minimalist reception desks while a trio of elevators whisk a mixture of
business and leisure guests to one of its seven floors.
Location
City center location opposite main station with easy access from motorway exit
The hotel is
located on busy Argyle Street in the center of Glasgow just opposite its main
train station. Besides being well-placed for those arriving by train, all of
the city's main attractions are well within walking distance. The main shopping
area of Buchanan is half a mile away, while George Square -- one of the city's
main hubs with many of the city's best restaurants -- is about 10 minutes away on
foot. Easy access from the M8 motorway
exit makes it convenient for drivers, while Glasgow's SSE Hydro and SECC
concert and event venues are just five minutes away by car.
Rooms
Three design styles and free Wi-Fi -- though some uncomfortable beds
The hotel has 250
rooms decorated in one of three designs: Modern, City Club,
or Gallery style. Modern references the
hotel’s locale and the city’s club scene, Gallery celebrates music stars
through black-and-white photography, while City Club rooms have lighter and fresher
interiors with unique artwork. All rooms are spacious with floor-to-ceiling
windows and include free Wi-Fi, well-stocked minibars, and large flat-screen
TVs. Bathrooms are finished in granite and provide high-end bath products --
though lack the design flair of the rooms. While rooms are well-maintained,
some furnishings do feel a little reminiscent of Ikea and there have been reports of
uncomfortably firm beds and elevator noise.
Features
Access to on-site health club with swimming pool and sauna
The hotel's Collage
Restaurant serves a buffet breakfast each morning (with an extended service on
Sundays) though it's not included in the standard rate. The restaurant also
serves lunch and dinner though dishes are pricey and there's no lunch on
Sunday. There are also two bars, one with a hip tropical vibe and the other
celebrating Grahamston village with craft ales and a good whiskey selection.
Hotel guests have access to the on-site Sports Direct health club which
includes a swimming pool and sauna as well as fitness room. While the hotel
doesn't have parking there is an NCP car park across the road.
