The 278-room Premier Inn is
a budget-friendly hotel right next to Charing Cross train station and around the corner from the M8 motorway. While the 14-floor tower looks
fine from the outside, interiors feel dated and there aren't many amenities except for an on-site restaurant, which serves a buffet breakfast of hot and cold items for a fee. Rooms can be noisy and run small, though some feature great views of the cityscape. While the hotel is nothing special, the rates are lower than most properties within walking distance of the city center; travelers on a tight budget may also want to compare rates at the nearby Ibis.
Scene
Budget chain hotel with dated interiors set in a prominent tower block
This Premier Inn occupies
a prominent landmark tower constructed in the early 1970s as part of the
Charing Cross Complex. The building originally served as offices until a
renovation in 1994, and reopened as its present hotel incarnation the following year. The property's fresh, white facade was restored in 2013. Interiors follow the chain's signature palate of purple with yellow accents, but they still feel dated and in need of modernization. The small lobby offers little beyond
a reception desk and a trio of elevators that service the hotel's 14 floors. The space is clearly designed for checking in and out, not for lounging or lingering. Guests are a mix of business travelers on a budget and tourists looking for an inexpensive place to stay.
Location
Next to Glasgow's Charing Cross train station and walking distance to the city center
Conveniently close to public transportation, the Premier Inn is practically on top of the city's main Charing
Cross train station, and it's around the corner from the M8 motorway, which connects to Glasgow International Airport in 10 minutes. The immediate area, however, is an unattractive mixture of busy roads and office blocks, and there's a strip club next door. Just a few minutes walk away is bustling Sauchiehall Street, full of shops and restaurants. There's a large parking lot next door for guests' cars, and the center of Glasgow can be reached in five minutes by car or 15 minutes on foot.
Rooms
Basic and dated rooms with some traffic noise, though many have great views
Sparse and simple, the hotel's 278
rooms are decked out in blonde wood furnishings, white
walls, and violet-toned carpets, wall art, and bed throws. Room size can vary a lot, and while the Single Rooms are tiny, Family Rooms can sleep up to two adults and two children. In-room amenities
include kettles and
flat-screen TVs. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos, wall-mounted hairdryers, and pedestal sinks, though the furnishings look worn and in need of an update. Some rooms -- especially those on the lower levels -- get traffic noise. The higher-floor rooms are certainly
quieter and many offer spectacular city views.
Features
Ample breakfast buffet (for a fee), meeting rooms, and free Wi-Fi throughout
The hotel's Thyme
Restaurant serves a generous breakfast buffet with plenty of hot and cold
items, though it's not included in the rate. A lunch and dinner menu is also
available and features items such as burgers, steaks, and salads, as well
as kid-friendly options. Wi-Fi is free
throughout the property and, while there's no parking on-site, there's a large parking lot right next door. Three meeting rooms are also available for rent and can fit up to 40 people.
