An upscale, artsy boutique hotel, the Indigo is located within a short walk of
Glasgow's buzzing city center. A blend of Victorian architectural details and contemporary furnishings, this property manages to be elegant without being stodgy. Rooms
are chic and attractive and come with great amenities, including free minibars. However, traffic noise can be an issue on lower levels and the bathrooms run small. The hotel's restaurant, Marco Pierre White, serves an excellent breakfast and reputedly
one of the best steaks in Glasgow. It's open all day and well into the evening. There's also a small but modern gym and free Wi-Fi throughout.
Scene
Chic boutique hotel with a chill artsy vibe and elegant period touches
Opened in 2011, the
Hotel Indigo Glasgow features an impressively grand Victorian sandstone facade
and a polished stone entrance with marble-trimmed doorways and wrought-iron grills. A revolving door delivers guests into an attractive, low-lit lobby
that blends the building's original Victorian features -- molded plasterwork, elegant arches -- with chic contemporary furnishings. The common areas are peppered with artwork created by local artists, most of which celebrate the city and the people of Glasgow. The art themes change from floor to floor; one level, for example, has photos of
popular Glasgow landmarks, while another features photos of its nightspots. The
vibe at this boutique property is both upscale and artsy while staying relaxed
and friendly. It attracts mostly vacationing couples looking for a touch of glamor.
Location
On a fairly busy road, a five-minute walk from Glasgow Central train station
The hotel is situated
on the corner of a busy junction just west of Glasgow's city
center. Most of the city's main attractions -- including
plenty of bars and restaurants -- are well within walking distance. The bustling
shopping district of Buchanan Street is around 10 minutes away on foot, as is Princes Square shopping mall. Glasgow Central
train station is also just a five-minute walk away, with regular trains that
connect to Glasgow's SSE Hydro concert arena and the Scottish Exhibition and Event Centre (SECC) in under 10 minutes.
Rooms
Elegant rooms with lots of amenities, including free minibars and Aveda toiletries
The hotel's tastefully decorated 94 guest rooms have similar layouts but different color schemes depending on the floor. Elegant touches like tufted headboards and patterned wallpaper hint at the hotel's Victorian past while staying contemporary. Framed prints of local points of interests adorn the walls. In-room amenities are outstanding and include minibars with
free snacks and soft drinks (as well as alcohol in higher category rooms), free Wi-Fi for
multiple devices, large flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks. While some bathrooms
are on the small side, all have walk-in rainfall showers and Aveda toiletries. Although rooms are well soundproofed overall, traffic noise can sometimes be heard in lower-level rooms.
Features
A quality buffet breakfast and (reputedly) Glasgow's best steak at the hotel's restaurant
Beyond the rooms,
the hotel's main focus is the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse offering a chic and
contemporary dining room just off the lobby. It serves a first-class buffet
breakfast (included in some room rates) with plenty of hot and cold items as well as
cooked-to-order dishes. At lunch and dinner, the restaurant serves modern European dishes based on locally sourced ingredients
and claims to offer the best steak in Glasgow. There's also a small but decent
fitness room with cardio- and weight-training equipment and while there's no parking on-site, guests get a discount at the
parking lot next door.
