Travelers looking for a modern and clean boutique stay in the center of Girona should consider the three-and-a-half pearl Nord 1901. It occupies an older building, so thin walls are an issue, but the design is elegant and modern for a fresh look. The 19 rooms, suites, and apartments are spacious and come with flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and minibars, plus kitchenettes in some suites and all of the apartments. There’s no full restaurant, though a pool, pool bar, breakfast buffet (for a fee), and two meeting rooms satisfy most of the couples that stay here. The nearby Hotel Ciutat de Girona is a good alternative with a restaurant, small spa, and indoor pool.
Scene
Boutique hotel with a minimalist design and a lovely outdoor garden with a pool
Located in a historic building that’s over 100 years old, Nord 1901 opened after a complete renovation in 2009. This boutique hotel has a sophisticated and minimalist decor with a neutral color scheme. In the lobby, the gray tones are punctuated by some bursts of color like gold triangular designs on the ceiling and colorful abstract paintings hung above cozy leather couches. Beyond the photo art pieces on the wall, the breakfast room feels a bit bland with its neutral color scheme and basic features. The most interesting aspect of the hotel is the outdoor garden, a patio surrounded by green vines and plants with a small rectangular pool as the centerpiece. Like other boutiques, the hotel attracts couples and tourists to its doors thanks to a convenient location and modern spaces.
Location
Most attractions are between five- and 10-minute walks away
Nord 1901 has a fantastic location for tourists. It sits right in the city center and is surrounded by restaurants and shops galore. The River Onyar is just a two-minute walk away. The Girona Cathedral and Girona Art Museum both take seven minutes to reach on foot. It’s a four-minute walk to La Devesa Park. Even Castell de Montjuic is reachable on foot at a 26-minute walk away. For those who prefer the bus, there’s a bus stop around the corner. It’s a 20-minute drive to Girona-Costa Brava Airport.
Rooms
Sophisticated rooms with flat-screen TVs, kettles, and minibars
The rooms at Nord 1901 are incredibly sophisticated and minimalist, decorated in shades of coffee, cream, gray, and taupe. All have wooden floors, white beds with brown velour blankets, and photographic prints above the beds. Rooms, suites, and apartments are available, and all are spacious with flat-screen TVs, safes, iPhone and iPod docks, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, kettles, and minibars. The suites also have living rooms with sofa beds, while the One- and Two-Bedroom Apartments have living rooms and dining rooms. Apartments and some suites have kitchenettes which include sinks, microwaves, two-burner stove tops, and platter ware, cutlery, and cooking utensils. Bathrooms are similarly modern and clean with showers or shower/tub combos, robes, toiletries, hairdryers, and heated bath towel racks. Note that not all views are ideal -- some rooms overlook airshafts. Guests have also complained about bothersome noise from inside and outside due to thin walls.
Features
Pool, garden, pool bar, breakfast buffet, meeting rooms, free Wi-Fi, and nearby parking
For a small boutique hotel, Nord 1901 has quite a few features. There is a tiny, but handsome, garden with a swimming pool surrounded by greenery, loungers, and tables and chairs. It’s the only outdoor swimming pool in the city center of Girona. A small pool bar services the area with drinks throughout the day. Though the hotel lacks a gym or full restaurant, it provides a breakfast buffet that consists of bacon, eggs, yogurt, pastries, fruits, cheeses, cold cuts, and cereals. Breakfast costs extra, and it isn't cheap. There are two fully-equipped meeting rooms for business travelers. Free Wi-Fi is found throughout and parking is available nearby for a fee.
