The reasonably priced Country Inn & Suites by Carlson, Gettysburg, has 83 rooms, including suites with separate bedrooms, microwaves, refrigerators, and wet bars. Located at the intersection of Routes 97 and 15, this two-and-a-half-pearl property is a seven-minute drive to downtown Gettysburg, and the stores and restaurants at the Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg are about a five-minute walk.
Major sights, such as Gettysburg National Military Park Museum and Gettysburg National Cemetery, are a short drive away. A hot breakfast is included in the room rate, and the indoor pool and whirlpool are in a pleasant area with vaulted ceilings and windows, but the fitness center has limited equipment, and the business corner has only one computer and a printer. Travelers might want to also check out the Days Inn Gettysburg, which has a smaller range of suites but lower rates.
Scene
Cozy lobby with fireplace and outdoor sitting areas
A homey living room area greets guests on arrival complete with a natural-stone fireplace, rustic
coffee table, and cozy seating -- including a distinctive leather sofa. Guests can relax with a book from the hotel's lending library. As a reminder of the history that permeates the location, a wall displays an enlarged version of
Lincoln’s handwritten Gettysburg Address. Outdoor sitting areas, including a sundeck and a porch with tables and chairs, are pleasant places to while away the hours, weather permitting. The breakfast area off the lobby can accommodate the morning crowds as guests catch the morning news on the flat-screen TV. Given its proximity to major Civil War sights and its large rooms and suites, the hotel draws mainly families touring the area.
Location
A short drive to the downtown historic district and major Civil War sights
The Country Inn is located at the intersection of Routes 15
and 97, about a six-minute drive to Gettysburg’s historic district and major
attractions, including Gettysburg National Military Park, Lincoln’s Gettysburg
Address Memorial, Jennie Wade House, and the Soldiers’ National Cemetery. It's about a six-minute walk (or a two-minute drive) to the Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg, with its dozens of shops, a bank, and restaurants. Other restaurants, along with a convenience store, are about a three-minute walk away. The
Eisenhower National Historic Site is an 11-minute drive from the hotel, and the Gettysburg
College and Harrisburg Area Community College are about 10 minutes away.
Approximate drive times to regional airports include York (35 minutes),
Harrisburg (50 minutes), and Baltimore (90 minutes). There is city bus service, but it takes significantly longer than driving, especially outside the
historic district.
Rooms
Spacious rooms with microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi; most with sleeper sofas
The 83 rooms at the Country Inn & Suites are spacious and well maintained. They share a decor that includes red bedspreads, olive-color drapes, and two-tone, light brown carpeting, against walls of muted beige. But the furniture varies: Some
rooms have light-wood headboards and desks that hint of pine, and dark-gray, laminate dressers,
while other rooms opt for darker woods. Whether light or dark, the furniture appears to be budget quality. Standard Guest Rooms have one king or two queen beds, and two upholstered desk chairs. Family
Studios come with two queen beds and a sofa bed, and can sleep up to six. Larger suites have separate bedrooms, king-size beds, sleeper sofas, a second flat-screen TV, and granite-top wet bars. The VIP Suite has a wooden conference table with six leather office chairs, as
well as a larger wet bar. The Celebration Whirlpool Suite comes with a two-person hot tub. All rooms have microwaves, mini-fridges, and
coffeemakers. Bathrooms are bright with spacious granite vanities and huge
mirrors, but they are only of average size with white shower/tub combos and
beige tile floors. The rooms are
generally quiet and have free Wi-Fi and media plug-ins on the desks.
Features
Free hot breakfast buffet, indoor pool and whirlpool, and meeting space
Freebies are generous at the Country Inn & Suites, starting with the breakfast buffet, which includes hot waffles and boiled
eggs. Coffee and tea also are available
throughout the day, along with cookies, candy, and newspapers. Parking also comes at no extra charge. The lobby pantry sells snacks and beverages, including microwaveable items. An indoor
pool area is roomy with vaulted ceilings and windows, several tables, and an adjacent
whirlpool. But the fitness center is limited to a
recumbent bike, an elliptical, and one weight machine. The 24-hour business
corner has an Internet-connected computer and printer. An on-site meeting room can accommodate up to 70 people, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Coin-operated laundry machines are on-site, and valet laundry
and dry cleaning services are also available. As a special touch, the hotel also has a
lending library with books for both children and adults, and the staff will help arrange area tours.
