Bottom Line

The 99-room Melia Genova is an upmarket hotel filled with fine Italian marble, smart Art Deco touches, and modern pieces by renowned Italian artists. The hotel has an imposing facade and interiors are understatedly luxurious. Set in a quieter neighborhood away from "Old Town" Genova, the hotel is still within walking distance of many major attractions. Rooms are fresh and bright with marble bathrooms. The spa might be a little small for an upscale property -- the similarly swank Grand Hotel Savoia on the other end of town is a good alternative.

Scene

Polished hotel with imposing facade and stylish interiors

The Melia Genova has an imposing, polished marble facade. Designed in 1929 by local architect Giuseppe Crosa di Vergagni, the building continues to impress in the lobby with a patterned marble floor centerpiece, marble walls, and leather banquettes. An atmosphere of 1920's luxury and style continues in the hotel's gorgeous stairwell, with even more marble and Art Deco railings. Polished chrome elevators carry visitors to one of the property's six floors. Original art by famous Italian artist Silvio Wolf completes the scene of hushed modern elegance.

Location

Well-heeled neighborhood walking distance from Old Town

Just on the edge of Genova's well-heeled residential neighborhood of Carignano, this hotel is well positioned for exploring most of the city's attractions. The Renaissance church of Santa Maria is just a few minutes walk away, and both the Carlo Felice Theatre and swish shops and boutiques of Via XX Settembre are well within walking distance. There are no Metro stops nearby, but buses are available a block from the hotel.

Rooms

Tastefully luxurious rooms with bathroom TVs

The hotel's 99 rooms are finished with fresh, bright decor and stylish contemporary furnishings. Natural oak parquet flooring complements the gloss lacquer desk and warm muted fabrics. Original photos by internationally renowned Italian photographers decorate crisp white walls, and seating areas provide two soft armchairs and a modern glass-top table. In-room amenities include 42-inch flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and bathrobes and slippers. Bathrooms have walk-in showers and bathtubs finished in antique brown marble and fine white crystal, and for a real touch of luxury, mirrors house a 10-inch LCD television.

Features

Compact spa and extensive buffet breakfast

The hotel's on-site spa includes a small exercise pool decorated in blue-hued mother of pearl mosaic and features hydromassage jets. A Turkish bath and tropical mist showers are also available, as is a fully-equipped gym. The sleek ground floor Marea restaurant serves an extensive breakfast buffet each morning,
