Bottom Line

The Best Western City Hotel is an upper-middle-range property in downtown Genoa that is located a short walk to the Old Town. This value pick may not be the most stylish in Genoa, but it does go above and beyond the usual chain decor with modern furnishings and provocative art. Free quality breakfast -- with espresso and sparkling wine -- and free Wi-Fi are nice perks, as are the four iPads for guest use. Rooms are clean and have electric kettles, minibars, and flat-screen TVs. Views vary from panoramic vistas of Genoa's harbor to an alley.

Scene

A jazzed up chain hotel

Take away the courting style orange sofa, dark hardwood floors, and enormous color photos of women's faces on the wall, and you have a basic, small Best Western lobby with white walls and a wooden reception desk. Purple leather chairs and a sofa look slightly worn. The Lounge Bar where breakfast is served has yellow and orange tables and pretty chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. There's a small nook where four iPads are placed on a counter for guest use. Le Rune restaurant holds blue and white gingham topped tables and dining chairs that could use fresh upholstery, but the arched entryways are a nice touch.

Location

Downtown Genoa within walking distance to the Genoa Aquarium and Old Harbor

The Best Western City Hotel has an ultra convenient location on Via Roma for guests who want to explore downtown Genoa on foot. The aquarium and Old Harbor are less than a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The surrounding neighborhood is residential and quiet but has loads of shops and restaurants for all budgets. Genova Brignole railway station is about one-mile from the hotel and bus stops are nearby. Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport is a 15-minute drive from the hotel, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Clean and comfortable rooms with free, tailored perks for business, female, and family travelers

There's a wide variety of rooms and bed sizes to choose from at The Best Western City Hotel. Each room is clean and quiet, with a flat-screen TV, electric kettle, and minibar. Rooms tailored for women include a hair straightener, free room service, and fashion magazines. Families will appreciate special amenities such as a PlayStation game system, bottle warmer, and a cradle. There's a business traveler option for free newspapers and express check out. A suite upgrade is required for a private terrace with views of the harbor. Otherwise, windows face the alley or a paved courtyard.

Features

Free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and iPads -- but no fitness center

Free features give this property extra value. The breakfast buffet goes beyond yogurt and fruit with free sparkling wine and strong Italian espresso. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and there are four iPads in the lounge for guest use. The lobby has a desktop computer and printer, but no staffed business center. Expect to pay for parking and look elsewhere for a fitness center or swimming pool -- though these types of amenities are hard to come by in historic Genoa. Board games and free snacks are inviting extras.
