Bottom Line

The 412-room Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva delivers a luxurious lakeside hub with easy access to the Old Town’s museums, cafes, and restaurants. Amenities are plentiful, as the hotel has three gourmet restaurants, a lounge and bar, and even a trendy nightclub and a theater. The indoor pool is Geneva's largest private pool, and there's also a full service spa and fitness center with sauna and steam room. Despite occasional dated furnishings throughout, room rates are steep due to the prime lakeside location and bounty of luxe features, though another comparable choice that travelers might want to consider is the InterContinental Geneva, also a luxury hotel with a spa and pool.

Scene

Luxury lakeside property with sleek and chic contemporary interiors

It’s all about location at the Grand Hotel Kempinski Geneva, a luxury property situated on the banks of Lake Geneva overlooking the French Alps and within walking distance of the city’s attractions. The eight-floor hotel -- designed by TJCA Architects -- attracts many business travelers with its vast meeting facilities, as well as leisure tourists who value the prime locale. A glowing facade on the front desk and bouquets of fresh flowers add charm to the marble lobby, where the ceiling lights are reminiscent of a starry sky. The chic lobby lounge features similar ambient lighting as well as a long gas fireplace and a grand piano -- elegant accoutrements to the comfortable leather seating and sleek coffee tables.

Location

Lakeside location on Geneva’s Right Bank, within walking distance of the Old Town

Sitting on the edge of Lake Geneva, the hotel’s bustling location allows guests to explore Geneva’s popular tourist sites on foot. The hotel is situated beside a cluster of restaurants, pubs, and cafes. The Bains des Paquis pier, a popular sunbathing spot with inexpensive dining and the Gene Paquis ferry that makes trips across the lake, is just a two-minute walk away. The Old Town is about a 15-minute walk and full of many shops, cafes, restaurants, and sights such as the Grand Theater, Maison Tavel, and Saint Pierre Cathedral. It’s about a 20-minute train or bus ride to the Palace of Nations. Chamonix, France -- a popular skiing destination -- is over an hour away by car. The Geneva International Airport is a 20-minute car trip from the hotel.

Rooms

Elegant, contemporary rooms, many with lake views, and suites with separate living rooms

Rooms and suites are modern and tastefully appointed with sleek, contemporary furniture and neutral hues accented by details like red lamps and colorful art. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer lovely views of the lake and Jet d'Eau fountain, though some rooms have unattractive courtyard views. Features include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and writing desks. Large bathrooms have shower/tub combos and ample vanity areas, though some are dated. Suites offer more space with separate living rooms and deluxe amenities like Nespresso machines. Some also have dining rooms and private elevators. For an extra luxurious stay, the two-floor Geneva Suite is the largest continuous suite in Europe and features three bedrooms, two living rooms, a full kitchen, office, and boudoir, as well as a pool table, gym, hammam, and a fully-equipped security room. Long-term apartments are also available on-site.

Features

Gourmet dining and cocktails, a nightclub, theater, large indoor pool, full-service spa, meeting rooms, kids’ club, and more

The hotel is one of the best equipped luxury properties on Lake Geneva, with the largest private indoor pool in the city as well as a popular nightclub with a dance floor and DJs. Three restaurants -- including Le Grill with international cuisine, Tse Yang with Chinese food, and II Vero with Italian -- are all stylishly decorated and overlook the lake. The sophisticated FloorTwo Lounge and Bar has a hip atmosphere and a terrace, and there's also a cigar shop. Thirteen meeting rooms are available at the hotel, accommodating up to 450 people, and the 1,300-seat Theatre du Leman can also be rented out. The business center provides secretarial services and three PCs. The Kempinski Kids Club has two bright, colorful rooms (for ages three to 8) with games and a Wii console. There's also a large and modern fitness center that offers state-of-the art equipment, a yoga studio, sauna, and steam room. The luxurious Le Spa has 12 treatment rooms and a VIP suite with a hammam. Also on-site is Damien & Co, the hotel’s high-end hair salon.
