Bottom Line

Alight in colorful LED designs at night, the 70-room Sleep Inn & Suites is an otherwise standard two-pearl hotel on the outskirts of downtown, a 15-minute walk to attractions and restaurants on Parkway. Simple, spacious rooms have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves, and some have fireplaces or smoker-friendly balconies. Suites offer whirlpool tubs. Multicolored lights at the indoor pool complex -- which features a lazy river and a hot tub -- create a fun atmosphere for families. Additional amenities include a breakfast lounge, a meeting room, a small gym, and laundry machines. Travelers looking for a central downtown location may want to consider The Edgewater Hotel.

Scene

Standard two-pearl hotel that’s decked out in fun light designs

In the daytime, the five-floor Sleep Inn & Suites has a typical chain hotel appearance. The cream exterior, green roof, and brown doors on balconies face the quiet East Parkway. At night, however, this ordinary building is brightened up with LED lights that run along balconies and an entrance that glows blue. Automatic doors lead to the small front desk beside the breakfast lounge, where there are yellow cushioned and tables. There's also an elevator in the lobby and a few parking spots out front. More parking is at the rear of the hotel, including spaces for trucks and buses.

Location

On East Parkway, a 15- to 20-minute walk to donwtown

The Sleep Inn is located on East Parkway -- a quiet four-lane road -- beside a flower shop and other hotels. The Smoky Mountain Riding Stables, the Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum, and a number of shops and restaurants are within walking distance. It’s a 15- to 20-minute walk to downtown, with markets, shops, and restaurants along the way. The sidewalks and streets get crowded in central downtown, where there are tourist attractions such as Ripley’s Aquarium, the Space Needle, Ole Smoky Distillery, and Gatlinburg Sky Lift. Driving to the Ogle Log Cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park takes five minutes. Ober Gatlinburg Ski Area & Amusement Park takes 15 minutes to reach, as does Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge. The Titanic Museum is a 20-minute drive away and Dollywood is 25 minutes. Knoxville is an hour away and it’s a three-and-a-half drive to Nashville.

Rooms

Clean, spacious rooms, some with fireplaces and balconies facing the street

Rooms are clean and spacious with chain-like furnishings and some attractive modern updates -- stylish black-and-white bedding, black-and-white photographic prints hanging on walls, and green accent walls. The end outcome is comfy, not fancy. All rooms have microwaves, mini-fridges, coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, safes, ceiling fans, and irons/ironing boards, and some have fireplaces (that can only be used from October to March) and street-facing balconies. One-bedroom King Suites feature living rooms, fireplaces, two-person hot tubs, beds and two sofa beds. Smoking and non-smoking rooms are available. Bathrooms are simple and have shower/tub combos and hairdryers.

Features

Indoor pool complex, fitness center, meeting room, laundry facilities, and a breakfast lounge

The heated indoor pool has underwater lights that change colors and sits in a glass conservatory with views of the forest. There's also a lazy river pool with inner tubes and a hot tub. The small gym has a flat-screen TV, cardio equipment, and a water cooler. A meeting room large enough for up to 100 people can be rented out, and it comes with a kitchenette. Copy and faxing services are available on request and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Self-serve laundry machines are also offered on-site. A free continental breakfast with waffle machines is served on a counter in the lobby's dining lounge. Pets are not allowed; dog owners may want to consider the Sidney James Mountain Lodge.
