The 333-room Sentido H10 Playa Esmeralda is an upper-middle-range hotel featuring contemporary interiors. It is located on the outskirts of town, but has a secluded feel and direct access to (despite not overlooking) a sandy -- clothing optional -- beach. The spa is a highlight, especially the twin hot tubs, and child-friendly facilities are solid. Dining options include a buffet restaurant, snack bar, and a lobby bar. Rooms are clean and bright, with private balconies and sea views in some, but amenities are limited and Wi-Fi is available only in the lobby. Overall, this is one of the more popular hotels for good reasons, though for guaranteed sea-view rooms compare rates with the SBH Costa Calma Palace.
Scene
Bright, contemporary hotel with ocean views
The hotel has a pleasantly colorful, low-rise facade, and pretty blue tile steps lead guests straight into the lobby bar -- a bright and airy space combining chic contemporary furnishings, large bookshelves, and a charming centerpiece bird cage. The 2011 renovations of the hotel still look surprisingly fresh, while large windows provide plenty of natural light and the avian theme continues with colorful bird murals. Paved footpaths lined with volcanic rock meander through the immaculate grounds dotted with numerous cacti, palm trees, and other tropical plants. Large terra-cotta tile terraces offer views over the neighboring desert hills and Atlantic Ocean. A short walk leads to a sandy beach that's popular with naturists, which is a draw to more open-minded couples. Despite this, the hotel is popular with families with kids as well as couples who prefer to stay covered up, and it particularly attracts many German tourists seeking a sun-filled vacation.
Location
Set on southern outskirts of Costa Calma, next to Esmeralda Beach
The hotel is located at the southernmost end of the popular tourist resort town of Costa Calma, on the southwest coast of Fuerteventura. Though it has a peaceful and secluded feel, there's very little in the way of dining or entertainment within walking distance -- though the town center is a short cab journey. The hotel has direct footpath access to the small, mostly sandy Esmeralda Playa beach, though bathing wear is optional. The Oasis Park Fuerteventura and surf beach Playa de la Pared are both around 15 minutes by car, while the rugged beauty of the Jandía Natural Park is a 20- to 30-minute drive. Fuerteventura Airport is around an hour away.
Rooms
Bright rooms with spacious balconies and terraces -- some with sea views
The hotel has 333 rooms and suites, and decor leans towards breezy, island styling with blond wood furnishings, terra-cotta tile floors, and light fabrics. All open to spacious furnished terraces or balconies, some with views of the sea, but most overlooking gardens or pools. Rooms are short on amenities, however, with little more than mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs (channels are mostly German) and no Wi-Fi at all. Bathrooms are clean and well-maintained, with wall-mounted hairdryers, shower/tub combos, and chain-brand toiletries.
Features
Impressive wellness center with heated pool and two hot tubs, plus buffet restaurant and snack bar
All meals at the hotel are served in the main buffet-style Jandia restaurant, a spacious and relatively stylish dining area that extends to a sea-view terrace. While food is well-presented and there are live cooking stations, reports are mixed as to the quality and variety on offer. A snack bar provides light bites and drinks, and the lobby bar is particularly inviting, though there's little refreshment available directly poolside. Evening entertainment generally receives a good reaction. As with many hotels on the island, outdoor pools can be cold. There is, however, a nicely renovated wellness area with a heated indoor pool, two outdoor hot tubs, a sauna, and a steam bath. Child-friendly activities include a small kids' club, splash pool, and an outdoor playground, while tennis courts, a pool table, and mini-golf are available (for a fee). The only Wi-Fi is available free of charge in the lobby area. Rate options include half-board, full-board, and all-inclusive.
