The 39-room budget North Cliff Hotel is located just above Noyo Bay, with panoramic harbor views from each guest room and common areas. The hotel feels like a waterside condominium complex, with the lobby located at a slight distance from the rooms. Each guest room has a gas fireplace, sitting area, and private balcony; some suites have spa tubs by the hearth. Although the hotel is by the highway, all rooms face the Pacific, and the sunsets are spectacular. The North Cliff is a clean, pretty base of operations for exploring Mendocino, but without the wilderness feeling some other local inns provide.
Scene
Pacific Coast views, cozy fireplaces, lovely breakfast room
The North Cliff Hotel is located above the Pacific Ocean, with spectacular harbor views that are unforgettable at sunset. There is a lighthouse in the distance that adds to the panorama and feeling of being at the edge of civilization; although the busy highway behind the hotel with the constant hum of traffic belies this. The lobby is spotless and welcoming, with soaring ceilings and nautical touches. There is a gorgeous redwood grand piano, although when examined up close, it houses an electric keyboard. The centerpiece of the lobby is its freestanding gas fireplace surrounded by cushy sofas, but there is no chimney or mantel, which detracts a bit from the cozy atmosphere. Above the two-story lobby is the second-floor breakfast room with vaulted ceilings and large round windows with ocean views.
Location
Just off the highway near historic downtown, accessible to wineries and outdoor fun
The North Cliff Hotel is bordered by a noisy highway behind, and the Pacific Ocean in front, where traffic noise and foghorns compete for guests' attention. Historic downtown Mendocino is a short drive away, as are many other attractions, including the Skunk Train, five minutes by car from the hotel. Beaches and hiking are close by, as are a plethora of local wineries and many other vacation adventures, including abalone diving, deep sea fishing, whale watching, horseback riding, and surfing.
Rooms
Gas fireplaces, balconies, and panoramic views
Rooms at the North Cliff Hotel are fresh and homey, with gas fireplaces and balconies that look toward the Pacific. Many rooms are furnished with classic dark-wood sleigh beds and comfortable love seats; walls are hung with modern art prints and nautical-themed paintings. Spa Suites are furnished with heavy, ornately carved antiques, and have fireside double spa tubs with harbor views. Bathrooms in Standard Rooms are smaller, with showers only. Rooms come with DVD players, free bottled water, coffeemakers, microwaves, mini-fridges, and blackout drapes for light sleepers. Highway noise can be a problem.
Features
Gorgeous views, gift shop and newsstand, and free breakfast
The number one feature of the North Cliff Hotel is the gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean from every window and balcony. The hotel has a gift shop and newsstand on the premises. A free continental breakfast is served each morning in the bright and airy second-story breakfast room, overlooking the harbor. The lobby has free cookies and baked goods, along with coffee. Parking is free, but there are limited spaces, and spots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis only.
