The Mermaid and The Alligator is a nine-room upscale bed and breakfast housed inside a historic Victorian estate. The owners have taken great care to renovate the home with bold and vibrant decor and updated furnishings. Located on Truman Street, three blocks from popular Duval Street, the home is a quiet and peaceful area that is steps from the heart of the entertainment district. There is a lush interior garden with hammock, lounge chairs, and plunge pool, but there are no on-site restaurants for lunch and dinner and the cancellation policy is strict.
Scene
An intimate bed and breakfast
The former home that now houses this bed and breakfast was built in 1904 and has been completely renovated. Spacious verandas, hanging hammocks, a white picket fence, and lush garden landscaping all contribute to the relaxing vibe of the property. Inside the front double doors, there is a restored wooden staircase and vibrant artwork. The lobby is set up in true living room-style fashion, with a main gathering area featuring a set of comfortable red sofas (this room is a favorite hang-out spot for the owner's friendly dogs). The house is filled with personal touches and bold artwork, feeling more like a private home than a hotel.
Location
Close to the shopping and dining district in historic Key West
The Mermaid and The Alligator is located on Truman Street in a historic neighborhood in the heart of downtown Key West. Duval Street, a popular tourist area with shopping, dining, and nightlife attractions, is just three blocks from the hotel. Many restaurants are located within easy walking distance. Nearby, Sup Key West and Surf Key West offer water sport rentals and excursions. Across the street from the hotel, there is a lovely double-steeple church called The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea.
Rooms
Nine unique rooms with vibrant design elements
All of the nine rooms at The Mermaid and The Alligator are unique in size, shape, and decor. The Caribbean Queen has a four-poster king-size bed decorated in bold red pillows and white linens. Red drapes frame the windows and the bed faces a red wall with a collection of tropical-inspired artwork. More like a guest room in a home, than a hotel room, expect unique lamps and decor -- there’s a sitting area with a zebra print chair and white love seat. The bathroom has a large Roman soaking tub and granite countertops. The room has a large outdoor verandah with a plush seating area and hanging hammock.
