One of the only modern hotels in Key West
-- ironically situated in the Historic District -- this upper-mid-range,
50-room property is an ideal vacation spot. Close to the action but far enough
away to also be quiet, guests can walk to Duval Street or spend the day lounging
by the hotel's lovely pool. The rooms are minimally decorated but bright and
airy with tile floors, cool colors, and modern amenities like large flat-screen
TVs and free Wi-Fi. There’s no on-site restaurant or bar, though there are
plenty of options nearby, but there is a free daily continental breakfast.
Scene
Quiet with a vacation-ready vibe
This boutique hotel is vacation central.
While you might see the random person in town for work, the majority of
guests stay here to take in all Key West has to offer. The lobby is small and functional
at best: It's basically just a place to register at the 24-hour front desk, but
not to hang. Still, rattan chairs and wall photos of spectacular sunsets remind
you that you are checking in to chill out. The inn’s white facade with
turquoise awnings and all-white exterior hallways and balconies make the place feel bright
and clean. Though a bit of noise may sometimes be heard from the street
outside, the Silver Palms is generally quiet while still being accessible to all the
action.
Location
Right in the center of the island of Key West
Located on Truman Avenue in the Historic
District, this property is only three blocks from all the restaurants, shops, and nightlife on Duval Street. It's also possible to walk up to Mallory Square,
though it's a bit farther away (approximately 25 minutes); however, the stroll
is colorful, so it doesn't seem as far. The street outside the hotel has wide
sidewalks, so renting bikes is another option for getting around. The Silver
Palms Inn is also within one mile more or less of Nancy Forrester's Secret
Garden, The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, and the Audubon House Museum and
Tropical Gardens.
Rooms
Modern, spacious, and comfortable with amenities
All 50 rooms at the Silver
Palms are clean, comfy, and soundproofed. Minimally decorated with tile floors
and splashes of cool blues and greens, the plush beds really become a focal
point thanks to the high-quality Egyptian cotton linens, pillow-top mattresses,
and bolster pillows. Modern amenities are plentiful, including mini-fridges,
microwaves, coffeemakers, docking stations, 40-inch flat-screen TVs, and free
Wi-Fi. Suites are larger than regular rooms and may include pullout sofas
or additional furnishings.Individual climate-control
units will help keep the temperatures to your liking, and spaces have
windows/doors that open to patios for allowing in fresh air (though views are
often over the interior parking lot). Bathrooms are large but only have showers
-- which can be a problem since water pressure is consistently variable all over
Key West. Hairdryers and quality toiletries are on hand as well.
Features
Continental breakfast, saltwater swimming pool, laptops for guest use, and green thinking
Though there’s no on-site
restaurant or bar at the Silver Palms, there is a breakfast room where a free
continental morning buffet is served daily. It's nothing fancy but it will fill
you up before you venture out. The lovely S-shaped saltwater swimming pool
is open from sunrise to sunset and has a fun waterfall as well as plenty of sun
loungers on the deck. Minimal poolside drink service is also available,
consisting mostly of sodas and waters out of a cart with a few alcoholic
options presented. It's a little odd that the pool is right next to the
interior parking lot and that all the exterior hallways overlook cars, but it
is convenient to have free parking for guests set away from the street. (Some
might argue that these amenities aren't actually free since there's a daily
resort fee added to every reservation to cover these conveniences.) There’s no on-site business center per se, but there are laptops
that guests may use. Certified as green lodging by the Florida Department of Environmental
Protection, this hotel also features a variety of environmentally-conscious
practices, including linen reuse procedures, low-flow plumbing, and eco-friendly
designs.
