The 19-room La Mer Hotel and Dewey House is an upscale, adults-only property built at the turn of the century on South Beach. With its breezy yet elegant style, beachfront dining terrace, and access to a sister hotel's pools, spa, and three bars, this property offers the features of a resort with a bed-and-breakfast atmosphere. Guest rooms are beautifully decorated in a classic style, and have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers; some open to balconies. The property serves free breakfast, along with occasional treats like chocolate-covered strawberries, but there's a pesky resort fee and minimum stays are occasionally required. For a more exclusive resort-style vacation, guests may want to consider the Ocean Key Resort and Spa.
Scene
Upscale, beachfront property consists of two conch homes with elegant, tropical decor
The turn-of-the-century La Mer Hotel and Dewey House cater to adults wanting an upscale Key West vacation in walking distance to Mallory Square and directly on South Beach. The property is comprised of two conch houses that are shaded by palms and surrounded by white picket fences, offering romance and privacy. Pathways lead through the tropically landscaped grounds to a fountain near the beach, where there are blue and white lounge chairs and umbrellas available under the resort fee. Two nearby sister hotels are equipped with facilities found in larger resorts, including three beautiful pools -- one overlooking the beach. Wide front porches with traditional Haint blue ceilings have cushioned patio furniture overlooking sleepy South Street. Inside, a stone tile hallway leads to a lovely wood-floored reception area with cheerful yellow walls and red-floral-patterned curtains. In the bright lounge area with stone tile floors, stylish rattan furniture, and exposed white beams, guests can grab free newspapers, and help themselves to free coffee, tea, and orange juice. Books and fresh towels are also in the lounge, which opens onto a spacious patio.
Location
In Key West off of Duval Street, with direct South Beach access
Located near the intersection of South Street and Duval Street, the property is in a fairly quiet area with shops and a cafe across the street, and most attractions within a 10-minute drive. Best of all, this property offers direct access to South Beach, and is sandwiched between its sister hotels, which offer lots more features. Those guests wanting even more activity can reach Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum in 10 minutes on foot, or the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory in just a couple of minutes' walk. There are plenty of bars and restaurants on Duval Street, and guests can reach lively Mallory Square in about 20 minutes on foot. The Key West International Airport is a 10-minute drive.

Features
Beachfront dining, free breakfast, and a slew of facilities at sister hotels
The best feature of this property may be its beachfront location. Fittingly, guests can enjoy free breakfast -- including homemade quiche and waffles made-to-order -- on the spacious dining terrace facing the beach. The business corner on-site has a PC computer and a printer. Guests can also use facilities at sister hotels Southernmost Hotel and Southernmost on the Beach, including lawn and board games, a gym, and three pools -- one of which is oceanfront. There are also a private pier and tanning beach, and meeting facilities indoors, poolside, or beachside. The sister hotels also offer a cafe and three bars, serving fresh seafood, light bites, and tropical cocktails. Beachside and in-room spa services can be arranged.
