Gulf View Waterfront Resort

The Gulf View Waterfront Resort is set on a swath of flat parklike land that runs into the Gulf. A gravel driveway leads off the Overseas Highway through a brush of foliage into the property's grounds. A small "zoo" houses birds and a tortoise in thatched island-style cages that hang between palm trees and dot the grassy lawn leading to the water. The three-level white building houses the main office and some of the guest rooms -- a heavy layer of sea-foam green coats the walkways, outdoor floors, and accents like umbrellas. There isn't much of a lobby to speak of; instead a wood-lined front desk channels Florida kitsch and family charm. On the walls there's a fish tank, pamphlets about local activities, and a world map with pins marking where guests come from. Across from the main building there's an elevated pool, but the main draw here is the Gulf itself, which laps up against the resort's grassy shore and concrete pier.

On the north end of Marathon, Gulf View Waterfront Resort is situated on quiet Grassy Key. It's on a secluded stretch of Overseas Highway; there's a restaurant and bar about a one-minute drive away, and the Dolphin Research Center is one minute away as well. The highway has shoulders, but there's no dedicated pedestrian walkways. The closest Publix grocery store is a 12-minute drive away on Marathon, though there are a few small convenience stores closer. The property's location on the northern coast of the island situates it nicely for sunset views. It's a little over two hours away by car to Miami and Miami International Airport.

Every one of the resort's 11 guest units has its own style, though a homey beach vibe can be found in all of them. Each is named after an island character, such as the "iguana" room or "yellow tail." Rooms have white wicker furniture and island decor, like seashell lamps and dolphin wall decals. The look is cheerful and comfy, if a bit dated, with floral bedspreads and old tube TVs in some units. Amenities include ceiling fans, wall air-conditioning units, and beige corded phones. Guest Rooms come with two double beds, a stainless steel refrigerator, and microwave. Studios, One- and Two-bedroom Apartments have full kitchens (complete with kitchenware, dish soap, paper towels and other supplies), and some have private balconies with gas grills. Some rooms on the second floor have good views of the Gulf, though there are no elevators. 

Most of the hotel's amenities revolve around the water. There are kayaks, paddle boats, and canoes for guests to use for free (keep an eye out for manatees). Fishing poles are also available for rent, as are bicycles. Near the dock, which has a boat launch for smaller vessels, there's a communal grill for guests to BBQ. The pool, with a tile dolphin design on its floor, is raised above the ground to provide a clear view of the Gulf. The hotel's owners also provide recommendations for local fishing, diving and nature guides, and offer a discount on admission to the nearby Dolphin Research Center. And the hotel has its own mini "zoo," including tropical birds and a tortoise. Vending machines and coin-operated laundry facilities are also on-site, but there's no full restaurant, bar, or cafe for meals. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
