Bottom Line

Set in a beautiful natural environment overlooking the Spanish Harbor Channel, this 10-acre campsite caters to budget travelers -- particularly RV owners and boaters. Along with campsites with electricity and water hookups (some of which have lovely water views), the property also offers basic motel-style rooms, that though a bit dated, are clean and have full kitchens. The grounds include a marina with boat slips, a large outdoor pool, laundry facilities, and a game room. The friendly staff organizes activities, including happy hours and dance parties. There’s not much within walking distance, but there’s an on-site store stocked with reasonably-priced food, as well as fishing and camping supplies. Budget travelers might also want to consider the Seafarer Resort and Beach in Key Largo or the Tropical Cottages in Marathon.

Scene

Campsite and lodge set on lovely grounds with clean, but dated, decor

The atmosphere at Big Pine Key is rustic and relaxed, with lots of fishing decor adorning the interiors of the salmon-colored lodge. The expansive parking lot and campsites are landscaped with palm trees and some sites have lovely views of the marina. The wooden observatory deck also offers beautiful views of the water and wildlife, and Key Deer, an endangered subspecies of the white-tailed deer that lives in the Florida Keys, roam the property. Most of the interior areas have dated pink and green decor with lots of wood paneling, though the recreation room, with a pool table, has a minimalist look with cement floors that give it a modern vibe. Overall, this is a good choice for budget travelers and draws many boaters and RV owners.

Location

In a remote area of Big Pine Key, a short drive to restaurants and beaches

The lodge is located just off the Overseas Highway in the south part of Big Pine Key. There's not much within walking distance, but there are some restaurants a short drive away, including Springer’s Bar and Grill, which is a seven-minute drive, and Boondocks Grill, which can be reached in 13 minutes. Bahia Honda State Park with public beaches is a five-minute drive. It’s a 45-minute drive to Key West International Airport.

Rooms

Mix of tent and RV campsites as well as basic motel rooms

The lodge offers 72 Rustic Campsites for tent camping, which all have two picnic tables. There are also 107 camping and RV sites with the ability to hook up to water, sewer, cable, and electric services. There are 19 full hookup campsites by the canal, with beautiful views and boat slips available for an additional fee. The property also has one- and two-bedroom motel-style efficiencies as well as two- and three-room mobile homes, all of which have dated decor, but are clean and equipped with full kitchens. And there’s a one-bedroom Lodge Room above the camp office with a small refrigerator, microwave, and coffeemaker, while the two-story Loft Room offers the addition of a stovetop. All campsites and rooms have access to basic bathrooms, with clean white tile and stainless steel sinks.

Features

Well-stocked camp store, scheduled activities, and large outdoor pool

The on-site store sells frozen and canned foods, water, alcoholic and soft drinks, and toiletries, along with bait as well as fishing and camping supplies. Free coffee is available in the morning. There are daily adult and family activities, including arts and crafts, dance parties, ice cream socials, and fishing tournaments. The large oval-shaped outdoor pool is surrounded by sun loungers, with a covered seating area nearby. A recreation room has a pool table and ping-pong. There’s a small sandy beach with lounge chairs and a table with a palm umbrella. Coin-operated laundry machines are available for guests' use, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the campsite.
