Bottom Line

The 115-room NH Firenze Anglo American provides an historic Florence retreat for competitive prices, with lovely old world decor, fine dining and a sophisticated bar lounge, and a stylishly furnished terrace. This upper-middle-range property's log book includes the likes of Leo Tolstoy and Maria Callas, while offerings include free buffet breakfast, and classically chic guest rooms with antique furnishings and minibars. However, some furnishings are slightly worn; if this is an issue, travelers could also try comparing rates at the Villa Olmi Firenze -- MGallery Collection, which offers higher-rated rooms.

Scene

Historic Florence hotel with old world decor, a grand dining room, and an elegant bar

The NH Firenze Anglo American is a romantic Florence retreat in an historical -- former convent -- building and caters to couples wanting to be near the city center, but removed from the noisy tourist areas. Built in 1792, the hotel has an intriguing past, captured in a leather-bound log book naming Russian writer Leo Tolstoy and opera singer Maria Callas. Marble flooring and pitched, stained glass roofs create a lovely first impression in the lobby, while the lobby lounge has floor-to-ceiling windows, comfy black and white seating, crown molding, oil paintings, and a grand piano. Antiques are on display in the lobby, and newspapers are spread on a glass table. There’s an old fashioned elevator with stained glass accents, and a stairwell with an antique wooden railing. The elegant restaurant, II Granduca, is inviting and grand, with tall ceilings, arched doorways, glass doors, and marble flooring. The NH Anglo American Bar's dark wooden floors, handsome leather parlor chairs, and bronzed accessories amount to regal sophistication. Guests can also relax on the dark wood terrace, where wicker seating is shaded by large, white canopies held aloft by trellises of climbing vines and purple flowers.

Location

Near the Arno River, just outside the city center

The hotel offers a quiet vacation away from Florence’s city center, yet with close proximity to the action. The location is between Porta al Prato and Borgo Ognissanti. On foot, the Arno River is two minutes away, while central sights -- such as Piazza del Duomo, Museo Galileo, Ponte Vecchio, and Uffizi Gallery -- are about 15 to 20 minutes' walk, and Santa Maria Novella station is about 10 minutes' walk. Florence Airport is 15 minutes away by car, or about 20 to 30 minutes by bus; stops are within a half-mile of the hotel.

Rooms

Elegant rooms with antique accents and minibars -- though some need touch-ups

Options include Standard and Superior Rooms, and Junior and Standard Suites. Clean, white bedding and walls are accented with antique-style carved headboards, bronzed mirrors, and beautiful wood desks with red-patterned chairs. The herringbone wood floors, tall ceilings with crown molding, and antique sconces further enhance the elegant atmosphere. Guests, though, complain about worn wallpaper and tube-style TVs in some rooms. All are air-conditioned and have minibars, tea kettles, and free Wi-Fi. Forest green and cream marble bathrooms offer shower/tub combos or stall showers, bidets, and magnifying mirrors. Rollaway beds and irons can be requested. Upgraded rooms offer safes, bathrobes, slippers, sitting areas with sofa beds, and balconies or terraces.

Features

Three classic meeting rooms, restaurant, and bar

There is a stylish wooden terrace, accessible from the lobby. The hotel restaurant, Il Granduca, serves regional and Mediterranean fare for dinner and lunch. There’s also a large buffet for breakfast that includes cold cuts, pastries, fruit, and breads. The bar serves drinks and light snacks, such as soup and salads, until midnight. There are also three classically decorated meeting rooms, with the largest accommodating up to 90 people; audiovisual equipment, coffee, cocktails, and catering can be arranged. The front desk can also assist with airport transfers and reserving tours. Wi-Fi is free.
