Bottom Line

Located on central Florence's outskirts, this simple two-pearl option is a good value for the price. The 13 rooms have private en-suite bathrooms and modern comforts including air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. Desks and cheap rates attract students, while the beautiful lounge bar is convenient for late night snacks and drinks. Although the continental breakfast is basic and lacks eggs, it’s an adequate spread that’s a budget-friendly start top the day. Some areas may need a little TLC, but with such low rates, it’s hard to complain -- and spaces are kept clean. Keep in mind that walks to the Duomo will be long (over 20 minutes), but the Accademia is within a 10-minute walk. For a similar budget option with a more modern vibe, try Florence Dome Hotel.

Scene

Simple, no-frills budget option with an in-the-know owner, best suited to students and budget travelers

Those traveling on a budget are drawn to Hotel Savonarola -- a simple, pleasant option with clean rooms. Warm red hues run throughout the property, and quirky owner Riccardo -- who converted it to a hotel from a student residence in 2011 -- enjoys playing eclectic music while encouraging everybody to explore Florence’s rich cultural heritage. The beautiful lounge, recently redecorated in deep scarlet and fitted with conveniently-placed charging outlets, is a space designed for comfort and socializing between guests. Although the latter rarely occurs, much to Riccardo’s dismay, guests are attracted to the hotel’s decent location, comfortable beds, and good value for money. In slight contrast to the lounge and bar area, some rooms and the hallway could use a little TLC, but overall are clean and in good condition. Most rooms face an inner courtyard, meaning less natural light and no views. But with little noise, this is a solid place to crash for the night. The Savonarola attract students, couples, and families alike -- mostly from the U.S., East Asia, Australia, and Europe.

Location

At the edge of Florence’s historical center, a 10-minute walk to the Accademia

Hotel Savonarola is at the edge of Florence’s historical center, on a main road lined with trees. Although not as central as some of its competitors, most attractions are walkable, and guests prefer the lower room rates. The Accademia Gallery, where the "David" statue is housed, is just a 10-minute walk, while the famous Duomo Cathedral is 20 to 25 minutes away on foot. The Uffizi Gallery can be reached after an additional 10 minutes, near the famous Ponte Vecchio. Florence's main train station is a 25-minute walk for those feeling ambitious with luggage in tow, or a 15-minute taxi ride. Florence’s airport is 20 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Basic but clean with warm red decor - ensuite bathrooms, AC, flat-screen TV’s, free Wi-Fi included

Hotel Savonarola’s 13 modest rooms are basic, but clean, and make for a simple and comfortable place to crash at night. Most rooms are spacious, with warm red decor and traditional colored bedspreads. The beds, in particular, are great. Standard features include private en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and heating, flat-screen TVs, desks, and free Wi-Fi. Towels and basic toiletries are also provided, but there are no safes. Most rooms face an internal courtyard and get little natural light, but the plus side is there’s little noise at night. Bathrooms vary in size and style, but most are on the small side, with either showers or shower/tub combos. Quadruple and Triple Rooms are ideal for families and students sharing space, while Double and Single Rooms are suited to couples and single travelers, respectively.

Features

Standard city comforts with a pleasant lounge, bar serving snacks, cheap garage parking, and free Wi-Fi

Facilities at the hotel are limited, but fairly standard for Florence. The beautiful lounge area is suited to socializing and reading, and doubles as the breakfast room in mornings. That meal includes a continental layout of basics like croissants, ham, cheese, deli sandwiches, yogurt, and cereals. Eggs aren’t available, but the low cost is definitely a perk, and those in a rush can opt for the special croissant/hot drink deal. A bar in the corner serves drinks, as well as a snack menu with light bites later in the day. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout, and there’s garage parking available at a rate that’s cheap by Florence standards.
