Bottom Line

Classic style and a refined atmosphere define the Hotel de la Ville -- a traditionally styled three-and-a-half-pearl hotel on prestigious Via de’ Tornabuoni. While it may seem like the type of place with a stiff upper lip, things here are actually quite approachable. Rooms echo public spaces, with traditional Florentine style, and feature well-stocked minibars, smart TVs, and free Wi-Fi. The cozy hotel bar serves light bites, and holds a daily happy hour with discounted drinks and free canapes. A decent breakfast buffet is free with most bookings, and includes hot options. The location is prime for travelers looking to shop, and the Duomo is only a five-minute walk away. For a more modern option in the same area, try Hotel Cerretani Firenze, though it tends to be pricier.

Scene

Traditional Florentine hotel with a refined atmosphere

Lavish gold accents, marble columns, and floor-to-ceiling mirrors are everywhere in this hotel, a traditionally styled property that best suits couples, but also accommodates small families with ease. Although light pop music is commonly played in the bar, a hushed, distinguished atmosphere throughout the hotel is accentuated by handsome wood paneling and antique-style furniture. Conversation is politely muted between guests -- even during happy hour -- helping to keep things refined. Although this may seem like the type of hotel with a stiff upper lip, staff is incredibly helpful with local suggestions and arranging reservations. Otherwise, small details make the difference, like a cozy fireplace in the winter, and plush velvet armchairs and sofas. Hotel de la Ville is mainly popular with guests from the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Western Europe.

Location

On Via de’ Tornabuoni, Florence's main shopping street, a five-minute walk to the Duomo

Hotel de la Ville is located in a posh part of Florence’s historical center, on the quiet, pedestrian-only end of Via de’ Tornabuoni. As one of the city's most prestigious shopping streets, there are plenty of high end shops and restaurants all around. What's more? The Duomo is an easy five-minute walk from the hotel. Florence’s main train station is eight minutes away on foot, while the Uffizi Gallery, Accademia Gallery, and historical Ponte Vecchio are all about a 10-minute walk. For locally-sourced dining, guests can venture to the Mercato Centrale, which features various dining stalls on its upper floor, serving dishes prepared from the farmer’s market-style stalls below. It's an eight-minute stroll from the hotel. Budget 25 minutes to reach Florence's airport by car.ᐧ

Rooms

Classical Florentine furnishings with minibars, smart TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but no electric kettles

Echoing public spaces, Hotel de la Ville’s 68 rooms have a classical Florentine style, with heavy drapes and floral patterned furnishings. Rooms are pleasant enough and fairly typical for the city center, but they lack standard amenities such as electric kettles and irons. All do come with flat-screen smart TVs along with well-stocked minibars, free safes, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and soundproofing. Bathrooms have marble sinks with walk-in showers or shower/tub combos. Although the hotel is in a nice part of town, there aren't any views to notable monuments.Classic Rooms are the entry-level category, while Superior Rooms have more space, with armchairs for relaxing. The hotel’s two Junior Suites are significantly larger -- nearly twice the size of Superior Rooms -- and feature large sofas plus coffee tables, as well as bathrooms with separate tubs and showers. Suites are named after renowned Italian Renaissance artists, and have a separate living room with bathroom. The Donatello and Da Vinci Suites are separated over two floors in a maisonette-style layout, providing ample space for guests. Junior Suites and Suites also come with free bathrobes and slippers, though other premium features -- like Nespresso machines or high-end bath products -- are still notably absent.

Features

Standard amenities including a bar with evening happy hour plus breakfast buffet including hot options

Amenities are sparse at Hotel de la Ville, but this is standard for Florence hotels. Guests can get a (slightly overpriced) drink at the handsome American Bar, which also serves light dishes and hosts a daily happy hour that includes discounted drinks and free canapes. The decent buffet breakfast is included with most bookings, and is a varied spread of fruits, cheeses, cold cuts, yogurt, cereals, pastries, and bread. Hot options include sauteed mushrooms and boiled or scrambled eggs -- but omelets cost extra. Guest computers in the lobby are free to use, and the hotel also has a small meeting room with A/V equipment, along with free Wi-Fi throughout. Paid parking is available at a nearby garage, with valet service included in the price.
