Bottom Line

Hotel Albani
Firenze is a particularly elegant palazzo property with lavish period
touches, located a short stroll from Florence's main station. While its
street isn't particularly interesting, most of the city's tourist attractions
are within walking distance. Rooms tend to feel a little on the dated side
though some feature glimpses of the famous Duomo cathedral. The restaurant
provides fine wines and alfresco dining, while a small gym and sauna are handy additions for some. For a real slice of classical Florence, this makes an
excellent pick, though it can also feel a little old fashioned and rates are
relatively high.

Scene

Elegant Florentine palazzo with period features and furnishings

With its
Florentine-style yellow ochre walls and brown external shutters, the Hotel
Albani Firenze occupies a typically elegant palazzo mansion dating back to the early
20th century. Entry to the hotel is through large wrought iron gates that lead
to a private courtyard and a graceful entrance fronted with olive trees and
palms in terracotta pots. Stepping inside, guests find the ornately-coved lobby features
chandeliers, large classical paintings, and an imposing wooden reception desk. Classical-style
antique furnishing, white Italian marble, and patterned rugs adorn the lounge area and add to the timeless period feel. An old-fashioned caged elevator runs through
the center of a crimson carpeted stairwell, while corridors lined with
black-and-white photographs and sections of mirrored wall take a more
contemporary tone. The hotel's garden also provides a quiet and relaxing
spot with plenty of seating for guests largely comprising of vacationing
couples.

Location

One block from the main train station and within walking distance of the center

The hotel is
located on a side street just behind Florence’s main train station on the Piazza della Stazione. While the street itself is not particularly
interesting or attractive, the location is very central with lots of restaurants and shops, and plenty of Florence’s main tourist attractions easily
reached on foot. The Piazza del Duomo and its famous cathedral are an eight-minute
walk via the San Lorenzo market, while the gorgeous Ponte Vecchio bridge across
the River Arno is a 15-minute walk away. For business travelers, Fortezza da Basso convention center is a five-minute
walk away. Florence Peretola
Airport is about a 25 minutes' drive from the hotel, while Pisa Airport takes
around an hour. There's also a direct
train connection from the airport to the nearby Santa Maria Novella train station,
which takes an hour and a half.

Rooms

Some rooms feel dated, though others have nice cityscape views.

The hotel has 102
rooms, most of which are decorated with slightly dated and mismatched decor
with pastel walls, dark patterned carpets, and traditional Florentine-style
wooden furnishings. Superior rooms have brighter decor, with white furniture
and a more contemporary feel, while suites have softer, more tasteful decor and
some have four-poster beds. All rooms are air-conditioned and standard
amenities include minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs. Rooms
with views are available on request; these have small balconies overlooking the
Florence cityscape and partial views of the Duomo. Marble bathrooms have
shower/tub combos, and bathrobes and slippers are provided. Rooms can also suffer
from a shortage of electrical outlets.

Features

Classically-styled restaurant with excellent wine list and alfresco dining as an option

A continental breakfast buffet with Italian coffee, fresh pastries, cereals, and cold
cuts is included in the rates and served in the classically-styled restaurant. Breakfast
service can get busy at peak times. A la carte lunch and dinner menus are also offered; they include traditional Italian dishes and an excellent wine list from the
hotel's own cellar. Alfresco dining in the garden is also available during
warmer weather. The American Bar serves hot and cold drinks, light snacks and cocktails.
There is no pool nor spa facilities, though a small fitness room and sauna are
free for guests' use.
