Bottom Line

The Saddle & Surrey Motel is a quaint budget hotel off highway 36 in Estes Park, Colorado offering impressively clean (if dated) rooms and very accommodating staff. Closer to the fairgrounds than downtown, it's still quite near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, which is one of the area's main attractions. Surrounded by mountains, the Saddle & Surrey's views are beautiful. Breakfast is included and offers a selection of local pastries. It's a motel of simple facilities, but rooms are spacious and come with microwaves and mini-fridges, or kitchenettes.

Scene

Simple, quiet roadside motel with mountain views

The Saddle & Surrey is a modest roadside hotel with incredible views and a campground vibe. The accommodations are simple, but small touches go a long way toward differentiating this property; for example, the "Life's a Journey. Enjoy It" sign above the (unused) fireplace in reception, and the wood bear holding a welcome sign near the breakfast spread. An outdoor picnic area with red picnic tables, a swing set, and a barbecue surrounded by pine trees offers a nice, if slightly weatherbeaten, place to enjoy the views. A heated outdoor pool and hot tub, set on a wood deck lined with white plastic chairs, are also perks.

Location

Off the highway, just outside of downtown Estes Park

The motel is situated off Highway 36, the road that leads to downtown Estes Park and to Rocky Mountain National Park. At times, noise can carry from the highway, but generally it's pretty quiet along 36. The hotel is about two miles, or a five- to 10-minute drive, from Estes Park proper where there are a number of charming restaurants and shops. The fairgrounds are just over one mile away, and the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park is about 10 to 15 minutes away by car. Denver International Airport is about one hour and 20 minutes away.

Rooms

Exceptionally clean, with mini-fridges and microwaves

The rooms at the Saddle & Surrey are large and incredibly well-kept. Standard rooms are furnished with queen- or king-size beds, and each has a desk and a sitting area with a love seat and wood coffee table. All rooms have flat-screen TVs with cable, as well as mini-fridges and microwaves. Bathrooms are small and have simple beige tile, and either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos. Wood paneling along the walls lends a rustic air, but otherwise decor is typical of a motel, with blue carpeting, patterned polyester bedding, and nature paintings on the walls. Larger rooms with kitchenettes are also available, and each comes with a table for four, full-size refrigerator, microwave, and four-burner stove.

Features

Simple hotel, with free continental breakfast and a pool

Set amidst the Rockies, the hotel's location is beautiful and perhaps its best feature. As a budget property the Saddle & Surrey's features are otherwise limited. There are a seasonal pool and hot tub, and the hotel provides a continental breakfast for guests in the morning with coffee, tea, and local pastries. Near the picnic area is a small swing set and slide for the kids. Free Wi-Fi and parking are available. Pets are not allowed.
