The 102-suite Oberoi, Sahl Hasheesh is one of the top luxury picks in Hurghada. This family-friendly property is set on 48 acres of beautiful grounds that include a private, sandy beach. The beachfront pool is a relaxing spot in the sun, while the spa offers a great array of wonderful treatments, both private and for couples. Food is excellent and reasonably priced, which is a big plus as there aren’t any restaurants close to the hotel. Snorkeling, diving, and private day cruises are all available here, and there are ample daily activities for kids and families. Suites feature private patios, good amenities -- such as free Wi-Fi, large flat-screen TVs, and minibars -- and luxe marble bathrooms with sunken tubs. Some units have private pools. Travelers seeking an all-inclusive experience may want to consider the Steigenberger Al Dau Beach Hotel.
Scene
Luxury resort with a private beach and beautiful, serene grounds
Set on 48 acres of manicured gardens abutting a private beach, the Oberoi is an excellent luxury pick for travelers seeking some peace and quiet. Unlike most other resorts in this part of Hurghada, the property doesn’t offer all-inclusive rates or an entertainment program, which allows for a more serene vibe. The gardens are huge and beautifully maintained, with big lawns lined with palm trees, clusters of low buildings, and a vast beachfront area that includes a large pool, a 2,970-foot beach, and a pier with a gazebo. All rooms at the Oberoi are spacious suites with either small private courtyards or patios with private pools, making for a rather intimate feel despite the property’s size. Although the atmosphere is perfect for honeymooners and couples on a romantic getaway, families are wonderfully catered to here, with a kids’ club that offers daily activities, and fun things for families to do, including stargazing sessions.
Even from the outside, the property is packed with local character, but interiors are even more spectacular, featuring a refined design that incorporates traditional Arabic elements such as domed ceilings, eight-point stars, long open hallways decorated with lovely lanterns, and arched doorways. Rates are reasonable for a hotel of this caliber, but travelers shopping around for something cheaper (and not as opulent) can find a wide array of options nearby. The neighboring Albatros Citadel - Sahl Hasheesh is a good option for those seeking a more bustling atmosphere, complete with a long stretch of beach, airy (albeit somewhat worn) rooms, and a pleasant beachfront pool. The adult-only Sunrise Holidays Resort is a good alternative for couples wanting a kid-free vacation, while rates at the Jaz Makadina are similar to the Oberoi’s but they're all-inclusive.
Location
In a quiet beachfront area that’s a half-hour drive from Hurghada
The Oberoi is located in a rather isolated resort area about a half-hour south of Hurghada. The main attraction here is the lovely sandy beach, and guests tend to stay on-site during their vacation even though the property doesn’t offer all-inclusive meal plans. The Oberoi has partnered with local companies to offer desert safaris and Bedouin settlement visits about a 10-minute drive away, but travelers wanting to explore other major attractions should expect long drives, including to snazzy El Gouna resort town and its famous Abu Tig Marina, which is about an hour away from the hotel. Hurghada International Airport is 25 minutes away by car.
Rooms
Large, upscale suites with wonderful marble bathrooms and great amenities
The Oberoi is an all-suite property offering 102 spacious, upscale units decorated in a refined traditional Arabic style consisting of a soft neutral palette with pops of yellow and dark wooden furniture. Arched doorways and windows, beautifully carved woods, domed ceilings, and classic woven fabrics give rooms a strong local feel, while wicker chairs, plush couches with clean lines, and heavy dark-wood headboards balance out the more ornate details. Every suite has a living area separated from the bedroom by pillars (but no wall), as well as either a small courtyard adjacent to the bathroom, or spacious patio with a private pool and loungers.
Quality beds feature 12-inch pillow-top mattresses and several pillows, and there are two 42-inch flat-screen TVs in each suite, including one with a DVD player. International movies can be borrowed free of charge at the hotel. Additionally, all rooms have minibars, iPod docks, coffeemakers, and air-conditioning. Wi-Fi is free for up to four devices. Marble bathrooms are large and luxe, with sunken soaking tubs and separate walk-in showers, robes, and double sinks.
A few guests have reported spotting some minor wear in rooms and outdoor areas, but maintenance is overall good.
Features
Dive center, beachfront pool, excellent restaurants, great spa, gym, and kids’ club
The hotel is located directly adjacent to a long, sandy beach with loungers, umbrellas, and a wooden pier. The PADI-certified center offers diving courses for all levels, as well as day trips and snorkeling gear, and guests can book private day cruises to nearby spots, including Giftun Island. The pool is large and appealing, with a quiet atmosphere, a kiddy section, panoramic sea views, and a number of padded loungers. Dining is a highlight at the Oberoi. Although there are only two main restaurants on-site -- an all-day international eatery and a fine Indian restaurant -- food gets great reviews. Lighter meals can be ordered at the poolside Pergola.
The spa is upscale and pleasant, with a soothing atmosphere, great treatments, and a couples’ cabin with a private garden and a steam room. The fitness center is small but well-equipped, and there is a tennis court that guests can use free of charge. The kids’ club offers a range of daily activities for children of all ages, from treasure hunts to arts and crafts to cupcake-making and stargazing sessions.
