Scene

Georgian architecture and urban sophistication with touches of whimsy

The Roxburghe is a sophisticated experience
from the moment guests enter -- the stone stairs at the entranceway are sometimes draped in a red carpet. Its Georgian architecture
is embraced inside and out, with subtle strokes of trendiness, including filament bulbs and industrial-style lighting in the restaurant. A popular choice with business
travelers, the lobby is often filled with people working on laptops. There are
numerous spots for congregating in the lobby and bar, where guests can park in
quilted leather armchairs and gaze at the picturesque streets, or pull up a leather-backed bar stool at the long marble-topped bar stocked serving a range of Scotch whiskeys. Vintage touches are everywhere; the textiles and
wallpaper (including a few remarkable, but subtle, panels depicting vintage
photographs) are unusual and tasteful. The lovely fine dining restaurant
highlights the building’s formal architecture and ornate woodwork, without
feeling stuffy. The walls hung with clever food photography attest to the commitment
of the chef to fresh, locally sourced ingredients. There's a central
grass-lined courtyard for al fresco relaxation, and the elevator -- its interior wrapped in a bright, colorful photo of Edinburgh Castle -- reflects
the gorgeous castle views outside. The Roxburgh is elegant and timeless, with a
smattering of fun, drawing a nice mix of tourist families and couples, and business travelers.

Location

In the financial district, steps from hip George Street and the Princes Street shopping

The Roxburghe is well-located for business
travelers and tourists, in the center of Edinburgh’s New Town financial
district. The property sits on a busy block, just around the corner from hip George Street with
its nightlife, upscale boutiques, and fine restaurants. It's also on the
edge of historic Old Town, within walking distance of most of the city’s major
tourist sites. Princes Street, Edinburgh’s number one shopping destination, is
steps from the front door, and guests will find everything they need within an
easy walk. The Waverly train station is a 10-minute walk. Edinburgh’s airport
is about eight miles away, a 20-minute drive without traffic.

Rooms

Classic period decor, and modern bathrooms with vintage flair

Rooms at the Roxburghe vary in size, and
include tiny single rooms for the solo traveler. All have high ceilings with
elaborate period woodwork, and classical decor. Some rooms are done in rich maroon, and accented with sophisticated striped curtains, floral carpeting, gilt-framed artwork, and dark wood furniture. Rooms in the original wing have
more character; those in the new wing are quieter, set farther away from the street
noise. Light sleepers should avoid rooms over the restaurant. Some of the top floor
rooms on the property's south side have nice balconies with beautiful city views. The marble bathrooms
are elegant and modern, with pretty vintage-style fixtures and shower/tub combos. Standard amenities include
flat-screen TVs, tea and coffee (with shortbread), minibars, safes,
and free toiletries. Family Rooms are available upon request. Superior Rooms have access to the Club Lounge.

Features

Full-service spa, indoor pool, a gym with fitness classes, afternoon tea, and fine dining

The Roxburghe has a large indoor pool
with a sauna and steam room, and a fitness center that's a bona fide gym, with
personal trainers, health assessments, ample cardio and weight equipment, and
classes that include water aerobics, pilates, spinning, and more. Balance Spa
and Beauty offers massage, holistic body treatments, and facials; it's wise to
book ahead. The George Street Bar and Grill is a sophisticated fine dining
restaurant inspired by the grand European cafes and brasseries of the past, serving dishes made with locally sourced ingredients, and offering both kids' and pre-theater menus. The
Roxburghe’s traditional afternoon tea is an event, drawing locals and hotel guests alike.
