Bottom Line
The 97-room, upscale Crowne Plaza Edinburgh - Royal Terrace is
built in adjacent, historic Georgian townhouses, retaining their stately atmosphere and many original architectural features. On the edge of Edinburgh’s city center, the hotel offers easy access to the city’s top sights without much traffic and noise. Guest rooms are huge and beautiful, with elegant period moulding, fantastic bathrooms, and, in some, views of the Firth of Forth. The Royal Terrace is a chain outpost that doesn’t feel like one, and a good option for either tourists or business travelers.

An elegant, historic hotel, with a clubby bar, formal gardens, and luxe modern comforts
The Crowne Plaza Edinburgh - Royal Terrace is an elegant hotel with a history, occupying multiple Georgian row houses formerly called “Whisky Row" (possibly because alcohol merchants could watch their ships arriving from the windows). In converting the hotel, architects retained some of the original features, such as the heavy wooden doors and elaborate millwork. None of the decor really looks like it belongs to a chain, except for the metallic logo affixed to the wall behind the front desk. The rest of the lobby is stately and classic, with oil portraits, and handsome leather sofas flanking a fireplace.
The Garden and Terrace Restaurants are designed to fit the buildings: clean and classic. The Main bar is clubby, with lots of dark leather and rich woodwork, a wide array of malt whiskeys, and old photographs of Edinburgh on the walls. Outdoors, the hotel is surrounded by peaceful, formal gardens with fountains, statues, and a gazebo. The Royal Terrace is a glimpse back in time.

Rooms
High ceilings, gorgeous woodwork, and classic elegance
Rooms at the Crown Plaza Edinburgh - Royal Terrace are classic and
elegant, if a touch chain-like, with high ceilings, ornate woodwork, original fireplaces, chandeliers, and plush, rich-colored carpeting. Rooms come in several configurations, but all are huge. Bathrooms are similarly large, some with freestanding tubs in addition to walk-in shower stalls. All rooms are air-conditioned and have flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, tea and coffee facilities, and free mineral water; some have espresso machines. Some rooms at the front of the building have sea views; back-facing rooms overlook the gardens. Light sleepers can request rooms in the quiet zone.
Features
A bistro with indoor and outdoor dining, and a clubby bar

appreciate the lobby’s running station, with free route maps, water, and towels. The narrow fitness center has cardio and weight equipment, as well as gym wipes for keeping the equipment fresh. There is also a sauna.
