Scene

Chic and stylish boutique chain hotel with stunning staircase

The 13th hotel from the Malmaison brand, this handsome property follows the brand's signature super-chic styling -- and then some. Formerly
the Mathers Hotel, little expense was spared in restoring the 120-year-old
property to its former glory while adding plenty of plush contemporary, and
occasionally quirky, touches. The original intricate wrought-iron staircase
that spirals gracefully up to the grand domed ceiling is particularly
impressive, and gilt-framed artwork and mirrors create a mood of sophisticated
elegance.Tongue-in-cheek faux wooden-paneling introduces a playful element,
while ceiling spotlights and a lavish centerpiece chandelier create an atmospheric
low-lit environment that perfectly complements the sumptuous interiors and upscale
ambience.

Location

Five minutes' walk from Dundee train station and the banks of the Tay River

The hotel is
located a couple minutes' walk from the banks of the Tay River in the
center of Dundee. Most of the city's central bars and restaurants are well
within walking distance, and the Dundee Overgate shopping mall -- full of
fashion retailers, department stores, and fast food outlets -- is a block
away. Dundee's train station is also less than a five-minute walk from the hotel, while guestsarriving by car over the Tay Road Bridge will find the location particularly
convenient. Dundee Airport is about a 10-minute drive away.

Rooms

Plush purple velvet, marble-tile bathrooms, and free Wi-Fi

The hotel has 91
rooms, all of which follow the brand's signature sumptuous
contemporary styling, with plush purple velvets, moody contemporary decor, and
the odd quirky touch. Free high-speed Wi-Fi, upmarket minibars, and flat-screen
TVs are included in all rooms, and room service is available around the clock. Marble-tile
bathrooms are smart and modern, with heated towel rails and high-end toiletries,
and some have walk-in showers and freestanding, roll-top tubs. While some rooms have
large windows with views of the Tay River, others overlook the inner
courtyard and can feel a little gloomy.

Features

Destination restaurant with smoking grill and excellent wine selection

The hotel's Brasserie is a destination restaurant, featuring an attractive
blend of velvet and leather upholstery, a live-flame fireplace, and
industrial chic. The outstanding menu focuses on grilled meats, using a Josper
Grill to smoke cuts to perfection, and offers daily specials -- though even
entry-level burgers are expensive. The Malbar also provides plenty of comfy
seating and a particularly good selection of wine and bespoke cocktails, as well
as a panel of TVs -- the bar shows various sporting events. The bar and restaurant can get busy on the weekend.
