  • Guest rooms lack mini-fridges and kettles, and have tube-style TVs

Bottom Line

Outdated but well-maintained, the mid-range Hotel Komodor is located on the scenic Lapad Peninsula just a few minutes' walk from the beach and close to the restaurant-filled promenade. Its 63 guest rooms occupy three floors, with one wing belonging to an old stone villa. The air-conditioned units have free Wi-Fi and some have balconies with sea views, but there are no mini-fridges, kettles, or safes, and all have tube-style TVs. The real boon for a property at this pearl-level is the outdoor pool and poolside bar. The breakfast buffet is free and the restaurant is open for lunch and dinner, and it has a bar and outdoor patio. The nearby Hotel Splendid is a reasonable alternative for travelers seeking direct private beach access, but it lacks a pool.

Scene

Well-maintained hotel popular with European vacationers

Hotel Komodor was last renovated in 1998, but it's neat, clean, and well-maintained despite the outdated decor. The hotel occupies a converted old stone villa, which is connected to a newer extension, featuring a classic terra-cotta roof and charming blue-and-white striped canopies that hang over guest room balconies (and match the poolside lounge chairs). The small reception area verges on garish, with a faux marble reception desk fronted with gold stripes, a bright purple accent wall, and a pleather sofa and armchairs in pastel yellow. Similar outdated or unattractive decor appear in less flashy form throughout the common spaces, where caramel-colored wood furnishings and beige drapes are also common. But guests aren't really here for the interior decor -- with a terrace restaurant, outdoor pool, and nearby beach access, it's a competitively priced property frequented by European vacationers, many staying at here as part of a vacation package. The hotel is open seasonally from May to October.

Location

Overlooking the sea in Lapland, a quick walk to the beach and promenade

Hotel Komodor is located outside Dubrovnik's city center in Lapad, a seaside area popular with tourists and locals for its scenic coastline and beaches. The public beach is located directly across the street, a two-minute walk from the hotel. Lapad's seaside promenade is also an easy walk and extends for a few miles along the coast, with many outdoor cafes, bars, and restaurants to choose from. It's a bit of a hike to historic Dubrovnik, but a bus stop about a minute's walk from the hotel can take guests into the heart of the Old City in about 20 minutes. Dubrovnik Airport is about a 30-minute drive.

Rooms

Clean and comfortable, though decor is dated and amenities are limited

The guest rooms at Hotel Komodor are clean and comfortable, decorated in a simple, traditional style that's tasteful enough, but dated. Dark blue wall-to-wall carpeting is paired with beige bedding, beige floral carpeting, and basic wood furniture in warm, mahogany tones. Each unit has a full-length mirror, and framed prints that hang above the beds add a little color. Many rooms have balconies, some offering sea views, others overlooking the pool. The guest rooms located in the older part of the hotel, which used to be a period villa, offer a bit more atmosphere, thanks to the high ceilings, French-style double balcony doors with wooden shutters, and stone balconies. There are two family suites available, made up of two interconnected rooms.

Other than air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, there are few in-room amenities; mini-fridges, kettles, and safes are absent, and televisions are small, old-style tube TVs. The gray-tiled bathrooms tend to be small, with stand-alone sinks and small stall showers, and six guest rooms have shower/tub combos. All come equipped with free toiletries and hairdryers.

Features

Outdoor swimming pool, poolside bar, free breakfast, plus an on-site restaurant

For a mid-range hotel, Hotel Komodor's most notable feature is its outdoor swimming pool and poolside bar. Use of the sunbeds, umbrellas, and towels are free of charge. Guests can also stroll down to a public swimming area across the street, where a concrete terrace juts out to the sea's edge, and there's a sandy section for sunbathing.

Breakfast is included in the room rate and served each morning in the hotel's on-site restaurant. The buffet offers a standard variety of cold dishes and a few hot ones, too: breads, cereals, fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs, sausages. Light lunches are also served in the restaurant and dinner service is available. The hotel has a pleasant outdoor terrace which is shared with the bar, open throughout the day.

There's free Wi-Fi thought, including the pool area, though some guests find it unreliable. Guests can also access the internet from a computer in the lobby, albeit for an extra fee. There's also a meeting and event room for up to 30 people, and a few free parking spots located directly across from the hotel. Though there's no on-site gym, guests staying at Hotel Komodor have access (for an extra charge) to wellness facilities at Hotel Uvala, a sister property located just up the street. Airport shuttle service can be arranged for an extra fee.
