Being one of Dublin's only family-run hotels, it's no surprise the Sandymount Hotel takes pride in things having a personal touch -- expect a chat with the owner during your stay. The location is perfect for those attending a match or gig at the Aviva Stadium, which is a few minutes' walk away. Dublin's center is also easily accessible via the hotel's shuttle service or the DART rail just outside the stadium. Rooms deliver on decor and amenities for this caliber of hotel, while service excels beyond its three stars. Overall, this is a great value hotel if you don't mind being away from the city center, and like personal service. Travelers wanting to be within walking distance of central Dublin could try Maldron Hotel Parnell Square, which has modern decor and attentive service.
Scene
Family-run with fresh, contemporary vibe and outdoor space
Though housed in a modernized Victorian property, the Sandymount Hotel was constructed with bricks from an 18th-century distillery that once shared the same site. This family-run hotel has been managed by three generations of the Loughran clan since 1955, when it was opened as a 'temperance hotel' originally having no bar. The entranceway has a bronze statue of a pair of rugby players lifting another aloft, reflecting the owner's passion for the sport and the proximity of the Aviva Stadium. Inside, the atmosphere is welcoming and fresh: the bright and spacious lobby has clean-lined white and purple couches and warm wood paneling. The on-site gardens have the feel of a large backyard, complete with picnic tables, leafy trees, and well-kept shrubbery.
Location
Well-heeled, leafy Dublin neighborhood near pretty coastal village
The Sandymount Hotel is set on a quiet, leafy, residential street in the affluent Dublin Four district, a couple of miles east of the city center. The Aviva Stadium, home to rugby and soccer matches, is a couple minutes' walk away across the River Dodder, and the center of Dublin is a short hop away by DART rail -- the Lansdowne Road station is just outside the stadium. The local coastal village of Sandymount, birthplace of WB Yeats and featured location in James Joyce's Ulysses, is also just a few minutes' walk away and offers pretty walks, and boutiques and cafés.
Rooms
Simple rooms with artful, contemporary touches
The hotel's 168 rooms are simply and smartly decorated in beiges and shades of red, with modern furnishings. Designer bed throws, art prints, and scatter cushions bring a sense of homely modernity, while in-room technology includes wall-mounted flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Tiled bathrooms provide shower/tub combos (some rather small) and include hairdryers.
Features
Irish breakfast, bar overlooking private gardens, and shuttle bus service
The hotel's bright and spacious Whitty's Restaurant offers a full Irish breakfast each morning, while the Line Out Bar serves drinks and upscale pub food throughout the day -- and has a roomy terrace overlooking well-kept private gardens. On weekday mornings, the reception area has free tea, coffee, fruit, and newspapers. A range of fully-equipped meeting rooms are available, and private events for up to 250 people can be held in the gardens. The hotel provides a shuttle bus service that drops guests off around Dublin, and collects them later. There is free on-site parking and Wi-Fi throughout.
