Bottom Line

Jacobs Inn Hostel is a friendly 71-room budget property with clean rooms and boldly colored 2016-renovated interiors. The location north of the River Liffey can feel a little dodgy at times, and it's a 15- to 20-minute walk from the center. However, the hostel is just a couple minutes' walk from Connolly Station and a Luas stop. Private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and dorms with en-suite or shared bathrooms are available. All beds have privacy curtains, sockets, and lights, as well as under-bed lockers. The hostel has a large, modern communal kitchen, coffee bar, and serves free continental breakfast daily. A games room, spacious lobby, and rooftop terrace offer plenty of space for hanging out and there's free Wi-Fi throughout. Nearby Issacs Hostel is clean and trendy and has lower rates, but rooms are more bare-bones.

Scene

Lively and friendly hostel for budget travelers

Jacob's Inn is a lively and friendly hostel with modern, colorful interiors. Several common areas of this property, including reception, the dining area, and the communal kitchen were renovated in 2016 and have a trendy feel. In the reception area, there are bright orange and yellow couches and a hip-looking coffee counter selling brew from a local Dublin roaster. An electric fireplace, beanbag chairs, a large flat-screen TV, and vending machines with drinks and snacks complete the fun space. Funky black-and-white illustrations decorate lime-green walls in the dining room. The rooftop terrace has a pared-down industrial vibe. Most guests are backpackers, including solo travelers who comment favorably on the atmosphere here. Families and groups of tourists on a budget also stay at the hostel.

Location

North of the River Liffey, close to Connolly Station and the airport

This hostel is located north of the River Liffey and is within walking distance of most sights in Dublin. However, the hostel is not located in the heart of it all -- the popular Temple Bar area, for instance, is about 15 to 20 minutes' walk away. The hostel is also just a couple of minutes' walk from Connolly Station, a transportation hub with buses and trains arriving from throughout Ireland. A Luas tram stop is also within a few minutes walk for easy access to the rest of the city. St. Patrick's Cathedral is a half-hour walk or 18 minutes by tram. Dublin Castle is a 15-minute tram ride or 22-minute walk. Trinity College, home to the Book of Kells, is only 11 minutes' walk. The area around the hostel can feel a little dodgy at times, but there are several other hostels as well as bars, restaurants, and shops in the neighborhood. A large grocery store is within 10 minutes' walk. Dublin Airport is about 30 to 35 minutes away by bus or tram.

Rooms

Simple and clean shared and private rooms with some nice perks

Rooms at the Jacobs Inn Hostel are bright and clean and have large windows for natural light. Decor is typical of a hostel, including wood-laminate floors, blue bunk beds, and simple wooden furniture -- some of which shows some wear and tear. All beds have privacy curtains as well as power sockets, lamps, and under-bed lockers. Bedding is provided and towels are available to rent for a fee. Room options include private Twin and Triple Rooms with en-suite bathrooms. Dorms range from four-bed private dorms with private en-suite bathrooms to 12-bed mixed dorms with shared bathrooms. Shared bathrooms feature mirrors, showers, toilets, shaving sockets, and sinks. Guests report that rooms and bathrooms are consistently clean. Children under age 16 can only stay in private rooms. Dorm beds were updated in 2016 and shared bathrooms were being renovated as of January 2017.

Features

Free breakfast, communal kitchen, and games room

A continental breakfast (with toast, cereal, jams and Nutella, coffee, tea, juice) is served daily in the dining room and included with rates. There's also a small coffee and snack bar, Celt Bar, in the lobby. The communal kitchen, updated in 2016, is spacious and modern with all the necessary appliances and storage space for guests' food. A games room has pool tables and foosball, and guest computers are available along with free Wi-Fi. Large luggage lockers are available for short-term use (bring a lock) for a daily fee. The hostel reception desk is open 24 hours and does security checks for late-night arrivals. Pub crawls, city walking tours, movie nights, and live music are offered regularly. Coin-operated laundry facilities are on-site.
