Bottom Line

While the Rixos The Palm Dubai is a perfectly pleasant, upscale resort hotel with an enviable Palm Jumeirah setting, there's not much in the way of real wow-factor or glitz found at comparable hotels. That said, views from the private beach and pool are certainly impressive, family-friendly facilities are excellent, and rooms are generally top-grade, many with furnished terraces and sea views. A particularly noisy beach club is turn-off for many visitors, however, and the location is awkward for exploring Dubai. Overall, it's a solid enough option with reasonable rates -- though lacking the pizzazz of the nearby (and not hugely more expensive) Sofitel Resort.

Scene

Average resort hotel with good family facilities but noisy beach club

Opened in 2011, Rixos The Palm Dubai occupies two sweeping, low-rise buildings that lack the architectural flair or glitz typical of many of the area's hotels. The lobby, however, is characteristically cavernous and flooded with sunlight from a glass-paneled wall and ceiling and provides a pleasant, bright, and airy main public space. Despite being relatively new and perfectly well maintained, much of the property already feels a little dated and lacks a wow-factor. Grounds are tidy, with manicured lawns and plenty of palm trees, and the hotel's setting ensures great views across the water from most vantage points -- especially from its superb sweeping jetty. However, while the hotel is geared towards families with kids and has a wide array of child-friendly amenities, the hotel's beach club and consequent nightly noise has proved an issue for many guests.

Location

Secluded and exclusive Palm Jumeirah setting, though awkward for sightseeing

Rixos is located on the Palm Jumeirah, one of two of Dubai's palm-shaped artificial archipelagos built out into the Arabian Gulf. The resort is situated right on the tip of the palm's east crescent so it gives the place an exclusive and secluded feel, but it also makes it a hassle to get to and from the Dubai mainland, which can take up to 25 minutes to reach. This means getting anywhere in Dubai can take a while -- especially with Dubai's notoriously busy traffic -- so the hotel is best for those who'd prefer relaxing on-site to lots of sightseeing.

Rooms

Elegant, contemporary rooms with lovely bathrooms, most with sea-view balconies

The hotel has 230 stylish air-conditioned rooms spread over 10 floors, all of which are sleekly decorated with elegant modern dark-wood furnishings and natural wood floors. Bathrooms are particularly nicely finished, with frosted-glass doors, polished stone, and separate free-standing bathtubs and walk-in showers -- swivel shutters open up to the bedroom. In-room amenities include 42-inch flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and bathrobes, while most rooms have balconies with cushioned lounge chairs and sea views. Not all room have balconies, however, and some of the cheaper rooms lack any kind of view.

Features

Good range of facilities and entertainment for kids and adults, and one of the island's better beaches

The hotel has two outdoor pools: a lagoon-style pool surrounded by lounge chairs and daybeds and a second long, narrow pool that's great for laps. However, some of the decking and lawns around the pool terraces look tired. The resort also features one of the better beaches on the Palm Jumeirah, with plenty of day beds and loungers.  There are three dining options on-site: A La Turca (with Turkish and international cuisine); L'Olivo (Italian fine dining); and Salt (specializing in fresh seafood). There are also three bars, an outdoor hookah lounge, and a Turkish patisserie. The Rixy Club offers special check-in services for children, as well as entertainment, activities, and childcare for the younger ones. Adult leisure facilities include a spa with a huge range of massage treatments, while evening entertainment consists of live music or the constantly throbbing Eden Beach Club.
