Scene
Historic luxury boutique hotel with a modern edge
History buffs will be hard-pressed to find a more elegant, intimate way to step into the fascinating story of Dresden than at this luxury boutique property. With an address right near Neumarkt Square, which was essentially ruined during World War II but meticulous reconstruction over the decades, this hotel's neighbors include and 18th-century church and plenty of Baroque-style buildings. However, despite its historic undertones, the hotel has just the right whiff of modernity, with a few cafe tables and chairs lining the gray cobblestone street. Inside, the hotel is sophisticated and maximalist, decked out in ornately patterned carpets, striped wallpaper, and glistening chandeliers. There are a number of fine places to pass the time after a day sightseeing, giving this hotel a refined social vibe. The lobby bar combines rich leather with dark wood, while the downstairs Gin House bar has a more modern feel, with lots of red velvet and flock-patterned accents. It's popular with those staying at the hotel and locals alike. Guests are mostly couples keen on enjoying the good life in the heart of Dresden's old town, though the property also draws plenty of business travelers with its array of chic meeting spaces and private dining rooms. While the atmosphere is mostly quiet, things can get a bit more lively when weddings are taking place here.
Location
Near Neumarkt Square, down the street from Frauenkirche church
This hotel is located in Quartier II of Dresden's old town, and is part of a cluster of Old World buildings on An der Frauenkirche near Neumarkt Square. There's a dirt lot right across the street, which isn't the most attractive immediate view, but otherwise the area is charming and atmospheric. The 18th-century Frauenkirche church is just a one-minute walk away, and there are numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops lining the surrounding streets. Historic and cultural sights located an eight-minute walk away include the Semperoper Dresden opera house, Dresden Castle, the Rococo-style Zwinger Museum, the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister Museum, and The Grunes Gewolbe, with Baroque art and jewelry. Dresden Cathedral is a five-minute walk away. Expect a 20-minute drive or 40-minute train ride from Banhof Mitte station to Dresden Airport.
Rooms
Classically elegant rooms with minibars and marble bathrooms; Apartments have fireplaces and roof terraces
A range of rooms are available here, though all embody the same classically elegant look and none are small. Entry-level rooms have 269-square-foot floor plans (25 square meters) and decorated in 19th-century style -- furniture is done in warm wood tones and walls are hung with classic paintings and etchings. Minibars are well-stocked, and there are flat-screen TVs in all of the rooms. The Italian marble bathrooms have shower/tub combos, and robes and slippers are provided. Junior Suites and Suites are also available, ranging from 377 to 484 square feet (35 to 45 square meters). The decor is pared down and elegant, with dark gold carpeting or parquet floors, all-white bedding, heavy gold drapes, and dark wood furniture. Junior Suites combine living and sleeping areas, while those areas are sometimes separated in standard Suites, which also have sofas. There are four Apartments as well, each measuring about 540 square feet (50 square meters) and equipped with a full kitchen. These are individually decorated, though furnishings and color schemes are similar to the Suites. Two of the Apartments have fireplaces and spacious, furnished terraces with views of the church. There's also a two-bedroom Apartment. Entry-level rooms do not have coffee or tea facilities. Safes and free Wi-Fi are in all rooms. Butler services can also be arranged.
