The Langham

Situated in an early 20th-century Federal Reserve Bank building, the Langham Hotel Boston is among the city’s most beautiful luxury options. The exterior is an exercise classic Renaissance Revivalism, while interiors include 18th-century English decor and furnishings. The 318 rooms are elegant and have an antique look that won't please everyone, and all include modern amenities like free Wi-Fi, large flat-screen TVs, and iPod docks or Bose sound systems. Noteworthy features include an indoor heated pool -- a rarity in downtown Boston -- plus swanky Bond restaurant and a modern, Chinese-inspired spa. The free local cab service is a unique service. Back Bay’s Lenox Hotel offers a similarly priced and appointed alternative that's within walking distance of amazing shopping, but it lacks a pool.

InterContinental Boston

Palatial, contemporary, and elegant, the InterContinental offers huge, immaculate rooms and an array of decadent amenities (massage, pool, sushi, cocktails) in a scenic harborside location, but the service doesn't quite compare to that at Boston's best luxury hotels. They have a cle d'Or concierge team and a 24-hour fitness center. In the summer, they offer outside dining on the Miel Brasserie Terrace as well as the casual outside 510 on the Waterfront Bar. Summer Activations include art nights and complimentary fitness classes on the back lawn.

Omni Parker House

Steeped in history and Old World grandeur, Boston's longest continuously operating hotel is the place to stay for a taste of the city's literary and political past. The surprisingly affordable 551-room Omni Parker House's heart-of-downtown location -- right on the Freedom Trail and one block from Boston Common -- is a huge part of its appeal. Other draws are the grand lobby, famous whiskey tavern, and iconic restaurant (the setting for JFK's proposal to Jackie and the birthplace of Boston cream pie). But manage your expectations when it comes to service and rooms. The actual accommodations are a tad disappointing when compared to the rest of the property; vintage-inspired rooms and suites feature flat-screen HDTVs and duvet bedding, but their overall feel is decidedly less luxe than the hotel's common areas. For an equally grand experience with a few more upscale services thrown in, try the Fairmont Copley Plaza, with its stylish, sophisticated rooms with marble bathrooms and award-winning bar overlooking Copley Square.

Marriott Vacation Club Pulse at Custom House, Boston

The all-suite Marriott Custom House is like your mom's Toyota minivan -- stylish it ain't, but it's reliable, comfortable, and accommodates large groups. Service is minimal, but big rooms with kitchenettes, a pool table-outfitted game room, daily fresh-baked cookies, and proximity to attractions make it a good value, especially for families.

Boston Harbor Hotel

The four-and-a-half-pearl Boston Harbor Hotel is among the city’s most iconic hotels, with a distinctively tasteful blend of ancient Roman, modern, and colonial styles throughout. Its list of features is long for any hotel, especially one that's downtown. Two gourmet restaurants, a wine bar, a health club and spa, and a heated indoor pool are all among the highlights. The 230 large rooms have antique and traditional touches plus Bose Wave music systems, marble bathrooms, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. The property’s prime location is within walking distance of Faneuil Hall and the North End, and many rooms have Boston Harbor views. For a slightly cheaper luxury alternative, the Langham Hotel is a nearby historic option with a Chinese-inspired spa and a swanky restaurant inside of the old Federal Reserve Bank.

Courtyard by Marriott Boston Downtown

This 315-room, 15-story affordable hotel has small standard rooms that make the most out of the space and a great location a mere block from the Boston Common. Free extras like Internet access, rollaway beds, and coffee help keep costs down -- and make us wish more hotels did the same.

The Westin Boston Waterfront

This 793-room, sleek, modern, 16-story hotel is a fantastic option for travelers with business at the attached convention center. Spacious rooms, a solid pool and gym, and a lively bar scene are corporate crowd pleasers. On-site dining is limited -- at the moment, as a new steakhouse is coming in October 2013 -- but there are several other dining options in the area.

The Ritz-Carlton, Boston

The Ritz-Carlton, Boston provides a refreshingly contemporary counterpoint to the city's many stuffy, old-school luxury properties. It also has a boutique-inspired style thanks to contemporary decor and intimate extras. The 193 rooms are coastal chic, with pops of gold and dusky blue alongside eclectic artwork and handsome wooden pieces. The best units have direct vantages onto Boston Common. There's an Equinox gym on-site, though it's only free for higher category bookings, and the hotel's Club Lounge has a posh living room vibe. We loved the fireside Avery Lounge with its bespoke cocktails, and the Artisan Bistro is a pre-theater destination for guests and locals alike. If you'd prefer a Back Bay setting over Boston's downtown, check out the Fairmont Copley Plaza instead, though rates are far higher.

Hyatt Regency Boston

The upscale, 502-room Hyatt Regency Boston is a contemporary high-rise hotel located in the downtown Boston theater district, a spot that's convenient for both tourists and business travelers. Features include several bars, and a farm-to-table restaurant. Guest rooms are spacious, understated, and sophisticated, with pillow-top beds and large flat-screen HDTVs. Nearby are the similarly priced Ames, which has a trendier feel, and the Intercontinental Boston, which has a waterfront location.

Boston Marriott Long Wharf

Surrounded by three parks, the New England Aquarium, and facing the harbor, the Boston Marriott Long Wharf owns a picturesque residence along the Long Wharf Pier on Boston Harbor. The idyllic waterfront address (near the airport, tourist sites, and downtown Boston) means this three-and-a-half-pearl property can afford to be expensive. Luckily the price tag translates to value that remains consistent even at 397 rooms: a clean, contemporary design, modern amenities, and spacious rooms with all the fixings. For those on a budget, it might be worth comparing rates with the nearby Hilton Boston Downtown -- a significantly cheaper stay that’s just as close to downtown.
