Located just a mile from the beach, two-and-a-half pearl Weymouth Bay Holiday Park -- run by the Haven chain -- has
plenty of green space, a choice of accommodation between caravans (trailers) or
chalets, and loads of family-friendly activities. The decor and grounds are a bit dated and run-down, and dining options are limited to one restaurant and a takeaway
pizza shop, but there are two good swimming pools, a lazy river, and a beach within
walking distance. The picturesque town of Weymouth is just a short drive away, too. Guests are welcome to use the facility and the nearby Seaview Holiday Park, as well. For a budget-friendly family vacation, this holiday park ticks a lot of boxes. For those with more to spend, check rates at Rockley Park Holiday Park, which has beach access and nicer pools.
Scene
Budget-friendly, family-catering holiday park
As might be expected at this type of holiday trailer
park (known as a caravan park in the UK), most guests here are families, and many are
looking for a low-budget break. The park has lots of sprawling lawns and sports areas for walks, ball games, and picnics, but maintenance
is lacking in some places. Not all of the equipment in the children’s play area
is in good condition, and there are some signs of wear and tear in the
restaurant. The pools and pool decks are nice enough, but can get crowded in the warmer months. There’s a lot to keep families busy here, though, and the lively buzz creates a warm atmosphere.
Location
Just inland from Weymouth Bay, a 10-minute walk to a pebble beach
Just inland from the Weymouth Bay seaside, Weymouth Bay Holiday Park is located on a
busy main road that leads from the town of Weymouth out to the suburbs. Weymouth’s center
is a 10-minute drive from the park, and has a scenic harbor and lots of nice
restaurants and shops. It’s also a 10-minute drive to the Weymouth Sea Life
Center, a popular local tourist attraction. The closest beach is the one at Bowleaze Cove, around a mile from the park, 10 minutes on foot; it's a pretty pebble beach with a small carnival, fish and chip shop, and cafe. Just across the road from the park's
entrance are two grocery stores and a pub that serves good food and has a
small garden.
Rooms
Basic, trailer-style caravans or chalets
Weymouth Bay Holiday Park offers either
trailer-style caravans or chalets. The caravans range from Standard to
Platinum, but all have a small kitchen and bathroom, and a gas fire in the
lounge area. Sizes vary from two to four bedrooms, and it’s worth noting that
bed linen is not provided, but can be rented from the on-site shop. Chalets
come in two different sizes, sleeping either four or six people. Bed linen is
included, and the chalets have heating, a TV with a DVD player, a small kitchen with a fridge and microwave, and a small bathroom with either a bath or shower. Pets
are welcome in the caravans, but not the chalets. Cleanliness within the
caravans is hit or miss -- some are spotless while others are poorly cleaned.
Previous guests have complained of mold on the curtains and a smell of
cigarette smoke. There are also signs of wear and tear, such as rips in the
sofas, in some. Overall, the decor is somewhat dated and run-down, and could use an update. Travel cots can be provided, although, in
the Standard Caravan, the cot will only fit in the living area, rather than a
bedroom, which can be impractical.
Features
Limited dining options but plenty of games and activities, and access to the nearby Seaview Holiday Park
Weymouth Bay Holiday Park has a heated indoor and
outdoor swimming pool with a lazy river connecting the two. The pools can get
very busy during peak season, so on some occasions, timed swim sessions are
enforced to prevent overcrowding. There’s a good range of other activities on
offer, though, including mini-golf, air rifle shooting, archery, fencing, a
soccer academy, pool tables, an amusement arcade, and an indoor soft play area for young children. Beach
games like cricket, rounders, and frisbee are organized free of charge, and, on
rainy days, children's activities like sand art are held indoors. There are also kids' club for a range of ages, and live entertainment is held regularly in the evenings; entertainment includes music, comedy shows, and quizzes. Dining options are
limited -- there’s a main restaurant, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner
are served, and a take-out pizza shop. Free Wi-Fi is available in
the restaurant, which also has an outdoor terrace. A footpath links Weymouth
Bay to its sister holiday park, Seaview, and guests can use the facilities of
both -- although they are very similar.
