Hyatt Residence Club Dorado, Hacienda del Mar
301 Carr 693

**This hotel was impacted by Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and is closed for repairs until October 22nd. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. **This upper-middle-range, time-share property half an hour outside of San Juan is surrounded by several golf courses, and for reasonable rates, guests can rent Studios, One-, or Two-Bedroom units with kitchenettes or full kitchens. Decor and appliances are dated, but units are comfortable for families, especially given the laundry facilities -- there is a stackable washer/dryer for every two units. The gated community is safe and peaceful, and families will likely enjoy the pool complex, beach, and mini-golf course. Marriott is taking over the desolate former sister property next door so expect construction over the next few years (until 2017 or so). Guests can retrieve a map from the front desk of grocery stores and Dorado restaurants, as the beach-side grill will get old after a day or two. Free parking and in-room Wi-Fi help make this a good option for long-term business residents as well. Note that a rental car is practically necessary.

Dorado Beach A Ritz-Carlton Reserve
100 Dorado Beach Drive

The 114-room Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve is a stunning luxury hotel combining elegant ocean-inspired style with extensive top-notch features. The private beach setting, lush grounds, and adjacent golf course makes for a stellar location, and the vibe is peaceful. Rooms are contemporary, serene, and huge, outfitted with bathrooms housing tubs and separate showers, furnished terraces with beach views, and espresso machines. Many come with plunge or infinity pools. Facilities include two ocean-view swimming pools, three restaurants serving tasty fare such as seafood and tapas, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an exquisite spa, and plenty of recreation activities -- there’s even a water park. Rates and resort fees make this an expensive stay, though most guests find the level of service and offerings worth it. For something similar with more to do nearby, consider the Ritz-Carlton San-Juan.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Dorado del Mar Beach Resort
Dorado Del Mar Boulevard 201

Located in Dorado on Puerto Rico’s north coast, the mid-range Embassy Suites features a large terraced pool and direct access to the beach -- although it’s not as pretty and calm as others on the island. Its 174 rooms are all spacious suites -- dated but comfortable -- with separate living areas, wet bars, mini-fridges, and microwaves. The free breakfast and free evening reception are pluses, but parking fees and taxes come as a rude surprise. This place is a magnet for families with young kids who dominate the pool, and the hotel is often packed, with long lines and scarce seating. Restaurants and shops are nearby, but the hotel sits deep within a gated community, really requiring a car. An up-to-date family-friendly option to consider could be the TRYP by Wyndham Isla Verde, which is by beautiful Isla Verde Beach.
