Bottom Line

One of Door County's many seasonal properties, the two-pearl Parkwood Lodge is a casual hotel right on Highway 42, outside downtown Fish Creek. Its wooded grounds with picnic areas and tennis courts, along with its proximity to Peninsula State Park, make it appealing for budget travelers looking to spend time outdoors, but there's little within walking distance. An indoor pool, a game room, and a playground make it kid-friendly. There are plenty of room options, including some with kitchenettes and wood-burning stoves, though most have a dated decor. For value rooms right in downtown Fish Creek, check the rates at the popular Main Street Motel.

Scene

Family-friendly budget hotel with picnic grounds

The Parkwood Lodge feels remote, housed in a cluster of buildings tucked into a wooded area, but it's right off the main thoroughfare that cuts across the Green Bay side of Door County. Daisies line the driveway that leads up to a patio decorated with colorful Adirondack chairs and the main office. The small lobby has a couch and a bookshelf haphazardly packed with board games. Around the corner is a wet bar with a selection hot pots filled with a variety of Door County Coffee blends for guests to drink free of charge.

Location

On Highway 42, across from Peninsula State Park

The Parkwood Lodge is outside the quaint downtown area of Fish Creek, just across from Peninsula State Park, which is known its iconic lighthouse overlooking the bay and year-round outdoor recreation opportunities. The hotel is right on Highway 42, giving visitors easy access to destinations up and down Door County, including the neighboring villages of Egg Harbor (a 14-minute drive south), and Ephraim (six minutes to the north). The small town shops and restaurants of Fish Creek, including historic destinations like the White Gull Inn, require a six-minute drive to get to, and guests should note that traffic in the summer can slow to a crawl. A Fish Creek institution guarded by suits of armor, the English Inn has an old-school menu may please supper club fans, and it's one of the few restaurants within walking distance. The airport at Green Bay is about 85 minutes away, while Milwaukie is three hours from the lodge.

Rooms

Budget rooms with microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers

The hotel's 59 rooms have exterior entry and are accessible by regular keys rather than key cards. Most have dated budget decor with plain carpets, some more worn than others. Basic rooms sleep up to four people on two double beds and come with small tables paired with pairs of chairs. Tube TVs sit on small desks, and all rooms have microwaves, mini-fridges, and coffeemakers. Some upgraded rooms add kitchenettes with two-burner electric ranges beside the sinks. Suites cater to families, and some have breakfast bars and bunk beds, while others have full kitchens, wood-burning stoves, and furnished patios. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos. Thin walls that lead to some interior noise and there have been past reports of musty smells in some rooms.

Features

Picnic grounds with grills, tennis courts, indoor pool and hot tub, and a game room

This seasonal hotel's large grounds and picnic areas are surrounded by natural woodland, and there's a fire pit flanked by wooden benches, charcoal grills, and picnic tables. Other features include a playground with a slide and swings as well as a little gazebo with a porch swing. A pair of paved tennis courts round out the outdoor amenities. For indoor recreation, there's a large heated pool (which has an adjacent sun deck) and a hot tub. A game room connected to the lobby has video games, a pinball machine, and a pool table. Wi-Fi and parking are free.
