However, a decent location and 28 well-appointed, apartment-style rooms — all with air-conditioning, kitchenettes, and flat-screen TVs — create a solid budget option for guests looking for a functional place to stay in downtown Santo Domingo. Aside from the tiny lobby lounge, there are no common amenities, and it can take up to 25 minutes to reach the Colonial Zone by car, depending on traffic. Fortunately, guests needn’t travel more than 10 minutes by car to find plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars. Although it’s pricier, Antiguo Hotel Europa includes free breakfast and a rooftop deck with excellent views of the city’s bustling Colonial Zone.

Low-key, budget lodging perfect for guests who like to keep to themselves
The hotel’s squat, five-story exterior and hard angled architecture is reminiscent of an office building and lacks any real curb appeal. Inside, the reception area and small lobby are adorned in mismatched budget furniture that has a bit of unpretentious charm, but style isn't exactly this hotel's strong suit. Additionally, the lobby is the hotel’s only common area, so guest interactions rarely extend beyond the daily check-in and checkout times. With one or two beds plus a kitchenette in every room, guests are a mix of budget and extended-stay travelers. Most aren’t looking for much more than a clean, cheap place to sleep and a few modern creature comforts.

Located in a charmless neighborhood, a 15-minute walk from Iberoamerican Park
The surrounding neighborhood is a rough-around-the-edges mix of small stores and homes. While there’s little in the immediate vicinity — and most guests likely wouldn’t want to venture off-property on foot after dark — a handful of local/chain restaurants and a large, modern supermarket are within a 10-minute walk from the front door along Av. Maximo Gomez. Santo Domingo’s Iberoamerican Park — a favorite spot for joggers, outdoor events, and a huge annual Christmas display — is just 10 minutes away on foot as well. Those looking for more tourist friendly haunts should head to the Colonial Zone, which can take up to 25 minutes to reach by car depending on traffic. Budget up to 40 minutes to reach Las Americas International Airport by car.

Every room is uniquely and simply decorated with an eclectic mix of IKEA-style furnishings and homey artwork. The style lacks any tropical flavor, and often feels more European than Caribbean. Floor plans vary depending on the room category, but most feature studio-style layouts with above average square footage. Suites upgrade to an additional living/dining room. Every room has a nice amount of amenities, especially for a budget hotel, including air-conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and a kitchenette with mini-fridge, sink, microwave, and two-burner stovetop. Wi-Fi is free in every room, and we found the internet to be reasonably reliable. Bathrooms range from cramped to average in size, with mostly modern fixtures. Shower stalls and generic bar soap are standard.
