Quiet neighborhood (pro for some)
ApartHotel Costambar is a modest, two-and-a-half-pearl property located across the street from lovely Playa Costambar beach. The hotel’s 18 one- and two-bedroom apartments are basic but tidy, offering kitchenettes and separate living areas. There’s an uncrowded outdoor pool on-site and the beach is less than a one-minute walk away. The peaceful surrounding neighborhood is a welcome change of pace for guests wanting to escape the crowds, but those looking for action may find it too quiet. Travelers seeking a more high-energy scene might prefer Hotel Villa Taina in Cabarete, though rates are a step up.
Scene
Unassuming apartment-style property with easy access to an excellent beach
Like its neat, no-frills apartments, ApartHotel Costambar’s public spaces are well-maintained but Spartan. The apartments are housed in a single, three-story building, which channels a villa-like aesthetic with its arched balconies and terra-cotta roof. There’s a tiny, separate reception building at the entrance, while the open-air lower level of the main building leads back to the pool -- and that’s pretty much all there is to this property. The attractive beach found about two hundred feet away adds significantly to its appeal.Guests are mostly Western couples and families, and while they’re generally friendly, there aren’t really any communal gathering places that lend themselves to socializing. It’s not uncommon to have the pool completely to yourself. The property is best suited to easy-going guests on a budget looking to see a lesser-trafficked part of the island.
Location
Relaxed location, within walking distance of a couple of restaurants and a beautiful beach
This property is located within the peaceful community of Costambar, a popular base for expats and time-share owners from North America and Europe. ApartHotel Costambar is located right across the street from Playa Costambar beach, an appealing stretch of white sands with some coral reefs found off its coast. There are a handful of casual restaurants dotted along the beach and one pizzeria nearby delivers to the hotel. There’s also a small grocery store about a 15-minute walk away (they also deliver too). Los Mangos Golf Course can be reached in about 10 minutes by foot. Gregorio Luperon International Airport is around a 40-minute drive away. It’s a great location for some, but guests looking to party will find that nightlife is nonexistent.
Rooms
Practical apartments offering private balconies as well as kitchenettes with hot plates
ApartHotel Costambar’s one- and two-bedroom apartments are clean and basic, featuring tiled flooring and minimal artwork. Separate living areas have clunky wooden furniture, including a sofa, a few chairs, and a small dining table. Living areas also feature flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi is offered throughout. Bedrooms have beds fitted with thin sheets, one or two side tables, and little else. All units have simple kitchenettes with mid-sized fridges, toaster ovens, and four-burner hot plates (you’ll need matches to light the latter). There’s a limited selection of cookware and cutlery in each, such as a frying pan, a knife, along with some other useful bits. Small bathrooms include showers and pedestal sinks. Towels are provided, in addition to off-brand soap and shampoo. Units also have balconies furnished with mismatched chairs, which offer ho-hum views of the courtyard below.
Features
Pleasant outdoor pool and free Wi-Fi
Like many apartment-style properties, ApartHotel Costambar has few on-site features. There’s a good-sized outdoor pool found at the back of the property, which is surrounded by a low row of hedges and a concrete wall. Around a dozen plastic white loungers provide seating. There’s also a compact, sheltered dining area found next to reception, which has a couple of plastic four-tops that guests are free to use. The property is staffed 24/7, and free street parking is available out front. Free Wi-Fi is offered throughout.
