The Imperial Torquay

Set on a cliff overlooking the sea and beautiful Devon coast, this historic property dates back to the Victorian era and its interiors reflect a bygone time. Chandeliers, sconces, decorative ceiling molding, and richly patterned carpets are a nod to the past, but though the spaces are elegant, they're a bit dated and showing minor wear. Many guests are able to overlook the tired interiors due to the property's scenic location and gorgeous views over the sea. Grounds are green and lovely, with meandering paths leading to stone terraces offering seating in front of gorgeous sea vistas. There's a beautiful sun terrace as well, where guests can relax on wicker furniture and take in the views. Nevertheless, the property doesn't live up to its self-professed four-star status, though it has plenty of potential.

Despite this, there are a good number of facilities for the price. Having an on-site restaurant and bar as well as an array of health and wellness features help make this an attractive choice for vacationing tourists. The clientele hails mainly from the U.K., and comprises both couples and families.

The hotel occupies a scenic clifftop position on the coast near Torquay's marina. This resort town on the South Devon coast is a charming spot and a good base for exploring the English Riviera. The marina offers many dining options, bars, and shops -- including department stores -- within a 10- to 15-minute walk from the hotel. There are beautiful coastal paths passing right by the hotel, while Meadfoot Beach can be reached in 15 minutes on foot. Other nearby beaches include Oddicombe and Babbacombe, both of which can be reached in about 10 minutes by car. The nearest attraction is Living Coasts, a zoo and aquarium that's a five-minute walk away, while the historic Torre Abbey, home to an art gallery and lovely gardens, is about a 10-minute drive away. Torquay Railway Station is an eight-minute drive away, while the nearest airport in Exeter can be reached in about 45 minutes.

Rooms are divided into three categories: Standard, Deluxe, and Suites. Rooms are traditionally styled and pleasant, but they're a bit dated and in need of a refresh. Subtly patterned wallpaper in soft hues is paired with striped or floral curtains and patterned bedspreads topping beds. The room we saw was clad in cool blue hues, but color schemes vary among the spaces. Wooden furnishings may show some wear and tear. The highlights here are the beautiful sea views and it's worth upgrading to get a coastal vista; some rooms have lackluster views over the parking lot. Certain rooms also have lovely private balconies.

Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, telephones, hairdryers, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Suites have one or two bedrooms as well as separate living rooms. Like the rooms, bathrooms could also do with some upgrades. They're fairly average in size and come with shower/tub combos. Bathrobes, slippers, and toiletries are provided. Note that guests occasionally complain of maintenance issues, like poor shower pressure and problems with the toilets.

The property has a decent-sized outdoor pool with terraced sundecks that are lined with loungers. The area offers beautiful views over the sea. There's also an indoor pool, as well as a hot tub, sauna, and solarium. Other wellness facilities include a fitness center, an outdoor tennis court, and a spa offering various treatments utilizing Decleor products, including facials, massages, and manicures.

The hotel's restaurant is an elegant dining space with a wall of windows that offers beautiful views over the sea and coast. It serves traditional English food for breakfast (included in some rates, or available for an additional fee), afternoon tea, and dinner, while light lunch fare is available at the bar. Room service is also available. Note that some past guests have complained that food is overpriced.

The hotel has nine event rooms that are available for various functions and meetings, including weddings. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. On-site parking is available, but incurs a fee, which may make some guests feel nickel-and-dimed.
