Bottom Line
Millbrook Cottages comprises a handful of upscale lodgings set in a rustic and relatively remote area of North Devon. The gardens here are particularly scenic, with winding streams and forest paths leading to timber snugs and pretty lakes. All cottages feature high-tech amenities, such as flat-screen TVs and fully equipped kitchens, as well as attractive decor. The lack of spa or swimming pool is a shame, but there is a hot tub in a cozy cabin.

Charming cottages set in pretty gardens that are full of friendly animals
Visitors pass between a set of wooden gates, up a gravel driveway, and into lovely quaint gardens full of pretty wild flowers, wooden bridges over meandering streams, and lots of animals -- including friendly alpacas, geese, and ducks. Winding footpaths -- many illuminated at night with fairy lights -- lead through fields and scenic woods to charming ponds and fishing lakes, while various timber snugs are dotted around the 32-acre grounds. The property also include quaint stone-built cottages, such as an old water mill and wheel room complete with old workings. Surrounded by nature and away from traffic, the atmosphere is particularly relaxing and serene, and Millbrook is popular predominantly with couples on a romantic getaway.
Location
Set in the lush and scenic countryside of North Devonshire
Millbrook Cottages occupy a relatively remote and secluded location in the heart of the picturesque North Devonshire countryside. A 10 minutes’ walk away is the ancient village of High Bickington, with its village church and centuries-old inns -- but there's little else within walking distance. Public transportation is pretty non-existent so a car is vital, while the surrounding narrow and windy country lanes can often be difficult to navigate.
Rooms
Homey cottages come with freshly made bread and impressive amenities.
Upon arrival in each of the cottages visitors are treated to a fresh homemade loaf of bread -- very much setting the homey and inviting mood of the property. As well as bread makers (encouraging guests to have a go themselves), kitchens include designer crockery and top-of-the-line cooking equipment, as well as washing machines. Tech is also impressive with all cottages providing free Wi-Fi, large flat-screen TVs, Bose stereo systems, and Internet enabled Blu-ray players -- some even have iPad-controlled lighting. Bathrooms are also impressive; some include jetted tubs (big enough for two), heated flooring, and imbedded HD TVs. Dogs are welcome in two of the cottages.
Features
Dining options include an all-weather BBQ hut and romantic private dinners -- but there's little else aside from nature trails
Around the property guests can find various buildings to enjoy, such as an all-year BBQ hut, lovely summer house -- complete with open fire, couches, and a vintage Space Invaders machine -- and a wooden cabin with hot tub and shimmering LED star ceiling. Private dining can be arranged in the summer house for a romantic evening, while the hotel can also arrange the delivery and unpacking of supermarket groceries for self-catering. There's no full restaurant, though. All guests at Millbrook also get two free passes for the local swimming pool, while includes a steam bath, sauna, and whirlpool. It's a 15-minute drive away, though, and there are no gym or spa facilities on-site aside from the hot tub.
