Bottom Line

The four-pearl 453-room Westin Book Cadillac Detroit is opulent and grand with upscale event spaces. The Italian Renaissance–style hotel was the tallest building in Detroit and the tallest hotel in the world at its completion in 1924. Today, many businesspeople can be seen at the hotel meeting and getting work done. On weekends, couples and families come in to take advantage of the easy access to venues for sporting and cultural events. Clean, modern rooms with Westin's Heavenly Beds and Baths appeal to all types of travelers, and the heated indoor pool, four eateries, spa, and whirlpool are a plus. Only Starwood members get free Wi-Fi access in rooms and the neighborhood can feel a bit sketchy to some.

Scene

Opulent historic building with grand event spaces

Completed in 1924 and now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Italian Renaissance-style building housing the Westin Book Cadillac has been completely renovated and modernized. In fact, there is little historic character remaining, so guests who are interested in the building's history will need to view the artifacts in display cases in the lobby. When it was built, the 23-floor hotel was the tallest building in Detroit and the tallest hotel in the world. Now, it fits right into its neighborhood of high-rises. The spacious lobby is opulent and well-lit, and there are a few cushioned benches for guests to perch on. The event space is grand and geared to well-orchestrated corporate events and weddings. The glamorous Italian Garden, a reception hall leading to the ballrooms in the conference center, is especially grand, with a high ceiling, arches, and extensive carvings and architectural details.

Location

Busy downtown location close to sporting and cultural events

The Westin Book Cadillac is situated on a busy downtown street with commercial buildings and parking garages surrounding it. There's considerable foot and vehicle traffic going by, but the area feels far from upscale, and past guests have complained about panhandlers in the area. The hotel is within a 15-minute walk of a number of attractions, including the Fox and Gem theaters, the Detroit Opera House, Fillmore Detroit, Comerica Park for sports events, Detroit's central Campus Martius Park, and General Motors World Headquarters. It's also a five-minute walk to the Michigan Avenue stop of the Detroit People Mover monorail for attractions farther afield. The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is about 25 minutes away. Valet parking or self-parking in a garage are available for daily fees.

Rooms

Westin's typical earth-toned rooms with Heavenly Beds and Baths

Rooms feature Westin's standard earth-tone color scheme with dark furniture and white duvets atop Westin's Heavenly Beds. Coffeemakers with Starbucks coffee add convenience, as do free bottles of water. Lounge chairs, chaises, or sofas in front of flat-screen TVs are conducive to relaxing. Desks with ergonomic chairs facilitate productivity. Premium rooms and above offer views of the city skyline or the river. Westin's Heavenly Baths provide White Tea bath amenities, large towels, robes, and a rain shower, and they are sparkling clean. Guests here on business may want to upgrade to the Executive Club Room which provides access to the Executive Lounge with free food and drinks throughout the day. Unfortunately, guests who are not Starwood members must pay for Internet access in the rooms.

Features

Four dining spots, good fitness center and business spaces, indoor pool, spa

The hotel's well-regarded Michael Symon's Roast Restaurant serves dinner nightly. It's best known for steaks, but it also offers seafood and other meats. 24grille is a casual lunch and dinner spot offering regional American fare from local Michigan growers. The Motor Bar offers cocktails and bar food such as pizza and sandwiches in an upscale setting. Breakfast is served daily in the Boulevard Room, both buffet and a la carte for a fee. Westin Weekends allows late checkout on Sunday, so guests can stay later when available. For guests who want to work out during their stay, the hotel has a small fitness center with Life Fitness cardio machines and also has teamed up with New Balance to provide workout gear for guests to use. There's also a small, basic spa. The indoor pool is suitable for swimming laps, and it has a whirlpool and chaise lounges for relaxing poolside. For business guests, the hotel is well-equipped for events, offering more than 30,000 square feet of sophisticated meeting space that can accommodate up to 1,000 people. It also offers Tangent at Westin which provides flexible work space for up to four people that can be booked by the hour. Wi-Fi in the public areas is free. Guests who do not have their own laptops can use one of the two computers in the business center. An on-site sundries shop sells magazines, books, snacks, and basic necessities.
