Bottom Line

The Hyatt Regency at Colorado Convention Center is an upscale property with an excellent location for business travelers and modern rooms. Situated across the street from the Colorado Convention Center in downtown Denver, the 37-story hotel is a veritable city in itself, with a spate of contemporary features and 60,600 square feet of conference space. The 1,100 rooms have 46-inch LCD Smart TVs, faster free Wi-Fi, and marble baths -- plus great Rocky Mountain views in some. With its massive fitness center, compact spa, and indoor heated lap pool, the Hyatt covers all the bases for its category. The eclectic American restaurant and 27th-floor lounge with incredible views are also popular with guests. For a boutique property downtown, guests could also consider the Hotel Monaco Denver - A Kimpton Hotel, which has a great spa, although rates tend to be higher.

Scene

Downtown Denver high rise with Colorado-style decor and corporate clientele

The Hyatt Regency Denver at Colorado Convention Center sits downtown amid other high-rise buildings and hotels. But with 37 floors and 60,600 square feet of event space, the glassy, modern Hyatt almost takes up an entire city block and stands out from the rest. The lobby is among Denver's biggest and features a soothing, Colorado-influenced palette of sandy earth tones accented with colorful abstract art by local artists. Glistening marble floors, beautiful stone accent walls, and floor-to-ceiling windows enhance the sense of scale. The Strata Bar off the lobby is also enormous and bright, with a lengthy center table suited to business gatherings or laptop work sessions. The 27th-floor Peaks Lounge is another popular gathering place for the largely corporate clientele here. The metallic- and black-leather couches offer a comfy setting from which to take in stunning views of the city and Rocky Mountains.

Location

Downtown, across the street from convention center, with easy access to sights

The Hyatt Regency is situated in Downtown Denver right across the street from the Colorado Convention Center. Other high-rise buildings and hotels surround the property and the 16th Street Mall, with shops and restaurant, is just a block away. For tourists, the Hyatt is within an easy walk or drive of many attractions. The Denver Mint is an eight-minute stroll away while the Colorado State Capitol is a 15-minute walk or bus ride (from 17th and Welton Streets). Civic Center Park, with a few blocks' worth of greenery, is a three-minute drive or 12-minute walk away. It takes less than 10 minutes to drive to Coors Field (six minutes), the Black American West Museum (seven minutes), Children's Museum of Denver (eight minutes), and the Denver Art Museum (three-minute drive or 12-minute walk). Another must in Denver is a visit to a microbrewery and there are several within five to 10 minutes' drive including The Great Divide Brewing Company and Strange Brewing Company. The closest ski area, Loveland Ski Area, is an hour drive. Estes Park, gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, is about 90 minutes away. Denver International Airport is about a half-hour away by car.

Rooms

Modern rooms with local artwork, 46-inch TVs, and marble baths

Rooms at the Hyatt, which already offered city or Rocky Mountain views, benefitted from full renovations in 2014. The earthy Colorado palette and local artwork seen in the lobby now continue into rooms, while Hyatt signature mattresses and white down blankets boost comfort. Each room also has a 46-inch LED Smart flat-screen TV and faster free Wi-Fi than before. At 360 square feet, each room has enough space for a clean-lined gray reading chair with a leather ottoman. Coffeemakers and mini-fridges are provided and morning papers and turndown service are available on request. Other notable upgrades are especially suited to business travelers: iHome alarm clocks, wood desks with slide-out laptop spaces, and two phones including a cordless phone with voicemail. Bathrooms feature marble shower/tub combos and granite vanities. They are spotless and nicely decorated with dangling pendant lamps, framed Colorado-themed artwork, and soothing light-brown wallpaper. Hairdryers, Aquafresh Exreme Clean dental products, and Kenet MD bath products are provided. Regency Club King rooms have access to a private lounge with free breakfast and hors d'oeuvres while Mountain View King Bed rooms offer enhanced panoramas of the famous Rockies. Suites have kitchenettes and the redesigned 1,104-square-foot Aspen Suite has a separate parlor with a table for six people.

Features

Restaurant and two bars, indoor lap pool, fully equipped fitness center, and plenty of conference space

The Hyatt has a few dining and bar options on-site. Altitude Restaurant serves a hot and cold buffet and a la carte breakfast (for a fee) that gets good reviews from guests and includes omelets and frittatas. Lunch and dinner are also served and tend toward American options such as grass-fed burgers, steaks, and various salads. Strata Bar in the lobby serves cocktails, wines, and beers in an open setting, while Peaks Lounge on the 27th floor offers up cocktails and appetizers with views of Denver and the Rocky Mountains. Perks Coffee off the lobby is open 24/7 and serves Starbucks Coffee and prepared snacks and sandwiches. There's a heated two-lane indoor lap pool with some loungers on the deck for post-swim relaxing. The outdoor deck also has a hot tub and city views. The Hyatt's 24-hour fitness center is impressive, with 6,700 square feet of space and various cardio and weight machines including a cardio theater with headphones for guest use. Spa Universaire has two treatment suites, including one with a fireplace. It offers various massages, organic Hungarian facials, and waxing treatments. For business travelers, there's 60,600 square feet of event space, including two 2014-renovated ballrooms. Some rooms are decked out with state-of-the-art monitors with area maps. Decor is upscale and professional, ranging from glossy wood paneling in the Limestone meeting room to flashy overhead sculptures in the Centennial Ballroom. The Hyatt also has a FedEx business center, an Enterprise Rental Car desk, self and valet parking (with fees), and free Wi-Fi throughout.
