Bottom Line

Hawaiian Inn is a 208-room budget hotel right on the sandy shores of Daytona Beach. Spacious studios and suites can be a decent value, as all have full kitchens and free Wi-Fi, units are privately owned so decor varies -- many could use a serious overhaul. The hotel has a large outdoor pool area with a tiki bar, as well as a kids' pool and an indoor pool. The hotel offers mini-golf, shuffleboard courts, and a seasonal breakfast cafe. All in all, the Hawaiian theme is quite tired and the resort is dated throughout. Families with children may want to compare rates with Sun Viking Lodge, which has organized games and an outdoor waterslide, but a smaller outdoor pool.

Scene

Hawaiian-themed beachfront hotel with dated interiors, but affordable rates

The five-story Hawaiian Inn has Pacific-Island decor throughout common areas, including in the lobby, where plantation fans, couches and chairs with floral print cushions, an island mural, and a tiki statue create a kitschy look. While everything is bright and colorful, it all feels like a holdover from a much earlier decade. From the lobby, guests can access the gift shop and a breakfast cafe that’s open seasonally. Hallways are narrow and dated, with old carpeting and unattractive room doors. Outside, the hotel has an Olympic-size beachside pool surrounded by lounge chairs and tables with umbrellas. There's a poolside tiki bar next to an indoor restaurant that serves burgers and makes for a decent social scene in high season. Brick steps lead down to the flat, sandy beach. Overall, though interiors are due for a refresh and there's plenty of age-induced wear, the property offers a decent value, given its beachfront location. It attracts a mix of families, couples, and friends.

Location

Beachfront location on South Atlantic Avenue, short drive to restaurants and shops

Hawaiian Inn is located directly on the beach on South Atlantic Avenue, the main drag that runs through Daytona Beach. The immediate area is full of hotels and condo properties, and there's a decent mix of casual dining and local shops within walking distance. The Daytona Boardwalk, Ocean Walk Shoppes, and Daytona Beach Bandshell are all within a 10-minute drive for those who want a better selection of things to do. Daytona Beach International Airport and Daytona International Speedway will take about 20 minutes to reach by car. Orlando area theme parks including SeaWorld, Walt Disney World Resort, and Universal Orlando are around a 80-minute drive.

Rooms

Individually owned apartment-style suites, some with ocean view balconies, but many are dated

Rooms at the Hawaiian Inn are individually owned, so while some have a bright and pleasant modern look, others are tired, dated, and are due for an update. It's worth checking ahead with the hotel to make sure that you're getting what you pay for. The Deluxe Ocean Front King Studio and the One-Bedroom Ocean Front Suite that we saw were in the "more modern" category. Both included an attractive blue-and-white color scheme with simple, but contemporary, furniture and cheery beach-inspired wall art. Additions like the antiqued coffee table set in the suite was a nice touch. However, the Deluxe Ocean Front Studio that we saw looked lifted straight out of the outdated suburban motels that line streets throughout Florida. This unit had a tropical-print bedspread, outdated traditional furniture, and a rattan table-and-chair set. All rooms include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and full kitchens equipped with refrigerators, ovens, microwaves, coffeemakers, and cookware. Bathrooms are homey, with tile floors and shower/tub combos. Some rooms have furnished balconies with ocean views

Features

Beach, large outdoor pool with pool bar, and heated indoor pool

The hotel has an Olympic-size beachside pool and a kids' pool surrounded by a sundeck lined with loungers. The poolside Ohana Tiki Bar and Grill serves drinks and casual food like burgers and fries. There's also a breakfast cafe in the lobby that's open seasonally, but breakfast is not included in room rates. The property also has a heated indoor pool, as well as a miniature golf course and two shuffleboard courts. There is a gift shop in the lobby that's open seasonally, as well as an ATM machine and video game machines. Coin-operated laundry facilities are available. Parking is free, as is Wi-Fi throughout the property.
