The two-and-a-half-pearl Apollonia is an affordable, family-run complex of 20 vacation apartments in the center of Paphos, just a 10-minute walk from the beach. Apartments are dated and kitschy but well-maintained and have fully equipped kitchens. Though the hotel lacks a restaurant or bar, it has a friendly, easygoing vibe that’s ideal for families or couples who want to cook themselves. There are always plenty of lounge chairs at the tranquil pool, as well as a convenient help-yourself snack bar and a shaded children's area filled with toys. However, there is no game room or organized kids' entertainment, meaning youngsters could grow bored during an extended stay. The Aliathon Holiday Village offers a full program of children's activities but rates are higher.
Scene
Quiet family-run property with stone paths and walled gardens behind an unassuming strip mall
Unpretentious but very clean and well-maintained, the Apollonia has a casual, welcoming vibe -- in part because of the friendly family that runs the hotel and provides quality service. An entrance in a shopping plaza leads to the small resort complex, which is set among gardens with well-trimmed hedges and stone walls covered with climbing vines. The utilitarian reception area's jumble of secondhand furniture and kitschy artwork lacks style, but is homey and comfortable. Small caches of paperback books tucked into hallways and public spaces are available for guests to borrow. Most guests are vacationing couples and families that appreciate the well-equipped apartments over a beachfront setting.
Location
Centered in the seaside resort town of Paphos, surrounded by shops and restaurants
Apollonia Holiday Apartments are centrally situated in Katos Paphos, a seaside resort and UNESCO World Heritage Site on the southwest coast of Cyprus. The closest beach is 10 minutes away on foot, and it's about a 15-minute walk to the picturesque fishing harbor. Several restaurants, tavernas, bars, and shops are within walking distance as well. The ancient Greco-Roman ruins are within a 20-minute walk. The airport is 25 minutes away by car.
Rooms
Three categories of large, apartment-style rooms with well-equipped kitchens
The Apollonia offers 20 bright and clean Studio, One-Bedroom, and Two-Bedroom Apartments that are decorated with mismatched furniture and kitschy artwork. Quirky touches include flower stickers on cabinets, stuffed animals, and clear tablecloths, but it gives the rooms a homey feel. Though Studios lack living room spaces, all rooms come with extremely well-equipped open-plan kitchens that are stocked with full-size refrigerators, stovetops, ovens, microwaves, electric kettles, toasters, dishes, and even citrus juicers. Second-floor apartments offer oversized balconies with loungers and umbrellas, while rooms overlooking the pool have smaller furnished balconies. Rooms also have 32-inch flat-screen TVs, but air-conditioning is only available for a fee. White-tiled bathrooms come with pedestal sinks, full bathtubs with handheld shower hoses, and free toiletries.
Features
Pool and kiddy pool with adjacent gym and honor snack bar
Sheltered by tall cypress and palm trees, the sunny pool area is where most guests congregate while on the property. The tile patio has inviting green-cushioned lounge chairs shaded by white umbrellas. The pool is a decent size and there's an adjacent small shade-covered children's pool near a playhouse surrounded by pool rafts, balls, and toys. In another corner is a self-serve snack bar that operates on an honor policy and has wine, soft drinks, and snacks. There's also an open-air gym equipped with a few dated cardio machines. The hotel provides free, secure parking inside a gated complex. Good, free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and guests can check their email and print boarding passes at a small business center inside the pool bar. Staff is also available to arrange massages and beauty treatments, or babysitting services.
